1) Bioaccumulation Lab
2) Biomes Activities
A) Here is the 16 Biomes Slide Show and picture of the map in color for the Biomes Assignment. Be able to understand and locate biomes on a map for the test and for a game in class!
B) Biome climograph matching game
- Print the 5 page document
- Cut out the title, map, and graph
- practice matching the cards for review.
- Use the KEY to check your work.
3) Tragedy of the Commons
4) The Carbon Cycle Game
5) One Planet Living
How many planets do you use?

6) Ecosphere Extra Credit:
The World that Came in the Mail
APES Ecosphere Assignment
For 5 points extra credit
Draw a picture of the biochemistry occurring in the ecosphere on my desk. Keep in mind that you will be recreating these cycles in your ecocolumn lab.
Include the following words:
- Consumer (shrimp)
- Producer (algae)
- The Sun
- Organic waste
- Inorganic nutrients
- Detritus Feeder (bacteria)
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Oxygen (O2)
- Glucose (C6H12O6)
Include the Energy cycle, the Decomposition cycle and the Gas cycle
Your picture needs to be scientifically accurate, colored, and on an 8½ x 11 paper.
There are examples posted around the room.
7)ECOCOLUMN LAB!
Use information from this link to answer the Pre-lab questions.
Please collect straight walled 2-liter bottles, no curves. We will use them to make Ecocolumns for one of our first big labs. I will tell you when to bring them in
October 14, 2018
Dr. Griffith bought Water Lettuce and Mosquito Fish from Connie's Pond and Koi in Castro Valley. You may use them in your ecocolumns. These organisms were living together in an outdoor tank so there are other living things that may have "hitched a ride" with the organisms that were purchased. I am still trying to get Anachris (elodea). They should have an order in next week.
10/18/18:
We have eutrophication! Thanks P3G5. The photo shows two containers with water from the groups aquatic chamber (They will restart their aquatic chamber.) The Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level is 1 PPM today. I'm excited to see if it changes. I will keep you posted :)
Ecocolumn Lab Controls
The orange and green capped are a positive control for potassium. They contain Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate C8H5KO4, distilled water, and the powder.
The purple and blue capped tubes are a negative control for potassium. They contain distilled water and the powder.
I think that it is easy to mistakenly say that the negative controls have potassium when they don't.
Distilled water test examples
October 2010: Two ammonia tests are from separate distilled water bottles. The bottles seem to be contaminated with ammonia which is a problem!
11/3/10 This is distilled water! 0ppm Ammonia
Professor Sprout brought a Mandrake to the Ecocolumn Lab November 30, 2019. Science is magic!
8) Salinization Lab
9) Porosity and Permeability Lab
Included below are the Instructions, worksheet, and rubric for grading the Porosity and Permeability Lab. PLEASE look at how you will be graded before, during, and after the lab to assure that your are doing the lab correctly. It is OK to make mistakes, in fact you learn more that way. Watch this clip ...
10) Edible Soil Lab
In this lab we will create the soil horizons using pudding, cookies, gummies, and sprinkles. You will eat through your "soil" as you listen to the lecture. I will provide the cups and utensils, but I need students to sign-up on the sheet below to bring the other items. Not everyone needs to contribute to make this work. I encourage students to make Vegan pudding or find Vegan gummies. Thank you for volunteering!
We had a great time learning and eating during the Edible Soil Lab! 2016
11) Cookie Mining
12) Solar Lab
February 2019-It was cold, but SUNNY!
A great couple of days for solar electricity.
13) Risk Assessment
14) Acts Matrix
15) Sea level rise
Try this link to see what sea level rise will look like in populated cities around the world
16) NOx and VOC chemistry
Ground-level ozone is harmful to humans. It can cause lung damage if inhaled in a high concentration. It can also damage plants and other outside structures through the process of oxidation. This video and worksheet will help you understand the chemistry behind how NOx and VOCs contribute to ground-level Ozone. (which is bad)
Print or hand copy the worksheet.
Watch the video and fill in the chemistry.
