Life after academia
This is a very long story, but I'll be brief. After getting tenure, performing the duties of department chair, teaching, writing, serving on a long list of committees, and living in student housing as the resident faculty member, I left academia. People thought I was crazy for resigning from a the job I had "for life." But, the fit wasn't right anymore. I have always resisted inertia, and while it was not just a little scary, and took me over five years to recover from the decision, I am glad I moved on.
I relocated with my sons back west. I was able to spend more time with my children. We even spent a year in France, 2 years in Tucson, and then back to the San Francisco Bay Area where I found a job in Silicon Valley, and where I work to this day. Been at Google since 2006.
