Getting away from home

After saving my earnings from working in the doll factory, I bought a one-way ticket to London.

This picture was taken by a Time photographer. We almost made the cover of Time Magazine (Secretary Rodgers beat us out). The photographer had approached me in the train station in Lucerne about this project. He went off to find another American, and came back with a young man who had the same last name as me, and a first name that rhymed with "Ann":

At one point, I was joined in Europe by my boyfriend, Stan. He was a fencer on the U.S. Fencing team (sabre). We went to many fencing tournaments around Europe. Here, he is pictured with the Polish fencer, Jerzy Pawlowski (on the left):

And here, he's pictured with the Russian fencer, Viktor Sidiak (on the right). The other gentleman was a Bulgarian fencer (Nicolai):

Years later, we heard that Pawlowski met with certain difficulties. Stan's parents sent me this news article from their Russian newspaper:
