Background

ØUrban air pollution represents one of the greatest environmental problems facing humanity even nowadays.

ØParticulate matter is a ubiquitous component of the atmosphere and plays a significant role in many areas including human health, climate, visibility, atmospheric depositions and air quality.

ØChemical composition of atmospheric aerosols includes trace elements, ionic species, carbon and organics which are exerting toxic effects to human health even at very low concentrations.

ØDespite the interest at international level and despite the existence of a severe legislation in the EU area regarding PM atmospheric levels and their impact on human health, atmospheric chemistry and climate, for Romania, in essence, the level of scientific understanding of the issues related to the interest subject is very low or totally lacking.
