Gr. 4/5 students and their families in the Japanese Reading/Writing After-School Program went to Japan this summer!
Purpose:
1) To experience the Japanese Language and culture first-hand
2) To reinforce and build on what they students have been studying in the regular Nihongo Program and the after-school program
3) To be immersed in the language and experience attending a Japanese elementary school
4) To share the Aloha spirit and unique culture of Hawaii
5) To develop friendships with Japanese children and their families
6) To deepen the understanding of the Japanese language and culture
There were 33 participants and here were the highlights of our nine-day trip:
Nagoya
Toured Toyota Plant and Toyota Museum
Visited Nagoya City Science Museum
Gifu
Attended Iwanoda Elementary School in Gifu
Stayed with Japanese host families
Kyoto
Dined at Denya Restaurant
Visited temples and shrines
Kiyomizu-dera (Temple)
Nijo-jo (Castle and Garden)
Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)
Ryoan-ji (Temple)
Sanju-Sangen-Do (Temple)
Osaka
Toured Osaka Castle
Visited Kaiyukan (one of the largest aquariums in the world)
Enjoyed KidZania (a theme park designed for children)
Experienced various regional cuisines and shopping!

"Hope we are in your next group!! This trip was made extra special since it was together with friends and our daughter had the best time sharing the experiences with her classmates. We also made a lot of new friends that also made it extra special for us. "On the top of my "bucket list" was to visit Japan. I always knew Japan was going to be a beautiful place, but I didn't expect it to be "picture perfect" beautiful. I tell my family and friends that haven't been there that "it's like walking into a picture." Everyone there is nice, the food is hundred times better then anything in Hawaii, they have the cutest things (even the manhole cover on the sidewalk is cute), and most of all, you feel so safe. I would go back to Japan in a heartbeat. Hopefully, next summer 2015, my family and I will be going to Tokyo and Hiroshima. Thank you Junko for making our dream come true! You're beyond awesome for planning this trip!"
