Looking for a gift for your young brass player? It is highly recommended that brass students begin acquiring mutes during their middle school career.
By the time they arrive at high school, trombone and trumpet players should have one of the following:
1) Straight Mute
2) Cup Mute
3) Harmon (Wah) Mute
4) Plunger
With mutes, the old adage of "you get what you pay for" certainly applies. The best value in mutes is likely Jo-Ral* (moderate price, exceptional performance). Other notable brands include: Denis Wick (high end) and Humes and Berg (moderate).
