A little about my journey, what inspires me, and where I hope to go.
My name is Alvaro Fuentes, and I am currently a Research Professor at the "Core Research Institute of Intelligent Robots (CRIIR-JBNU)" and the "Department of Electronics Engineering" at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) in South Korea. In my role, I serve as the research group leader of the Multimedia Laboratory. I also collaborate as a fellow at the "Trustworthy AI Lab" at Seoul National University (SNU) in Korea, and serve as an Invited Professor at the "Postgraduate Institute" of Tecnica del Norte University (UTN) in Ecuador. In 2025 and 2026, I was recognized among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in the Stanford University ranking.
I began my academic journey with a Mechatronics Engineering degree from UTN in Ecuador in 2012. During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to explore environmental science, renewable energy, and sustainability at Leuphana University of Lüneburg in Germany from 2009 to 2010, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). After graduating, I pursued research and university-level teaching in Mechatronics Engineering in Ecuador, while also gaining industry experience as an engineer in aerial photogrammetry, including several missions conducted in South America. These experiences broadened my perspective on engineering and its potential to address practical challenges.
In 2014, driven by my curiosity to explore the world and expand my knowledge, I decided to pursue graduate studies in South Korea. Moving to the other side of the world was an exciting opportunity to experience a different culture, learn from the dynamic academic environment of South Korea, and broaden my understanding of the world. I subsequently earned a Master's (2016) and Ph.D. (2019) in Electronics Engineering, specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision from JBNU. During this period, I developed a passion for combining my engineering background with AI to design and develop intelligent technologies with meaningful real-world applications. Following my doctoral studies, I completed postdoctoral research at CRIIR-JBNU and BK-JIANT IT from 2019 to 2022 and continued my research journey as a Research Professor, working closely with Master's and Ph.D. students at the Multimedia Laboratory. My international academic experience also includes research stays and studies in Germany supported by competitive DAAD fellowships, including Summer Schools (2011, 2012) and the PostdocNet AI program in 2019, as well as research collaborations across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
My research focuses on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Computer Vision, particularly computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, and robotics, with applications in smart agriculture, animal behavior, biomedical diagnostics, and intelligent systems. I develop advanced AI methods for crop growth analysis and plant disease detection, as well as animal behavior recognition, while exploring visual intelligence, trustworthy AI, and autonomous systems. My research aims to advance intelligent technologies that can perceive, interpret, and understand complex real-world environments. I am passionate about developing innovative algorithms that transform data into meaningful insights and practical solutions, while promoting reliable, ethical, and sustainable AI.
My commitment to sustainability is also deeply rooted in my experience living in the Amazon Rainforest during 2012–2013, where I worked as a research fellow with the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and CIGR-affiliated centers on sustainable development projects with local Indigenous communities. Additionally, I assisted in DAAD-funded ESD projects at UTN (2010-2013), promoting sustainability education among teachers and students at all educational levels. These experiences gave me a valuable perspective on the relationship between technology, people, and the environment. It continues to shape my approach to research and reinforces my belief that scientific innovation should contribute to a more sustainable future.
At JBNU, in South Korea, I teach Advanced Intelligent Programming, a graduate-level course launched in 2022 that has attracted 200 Master's and Ph.D. students from diverse disciplines. My goal is to equip students with practical AI and programming skills that they can directly apply to their research, while fostering innovation, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Since 2025, I have also taught Business Intelligence and Data Analysis in the Master's in Business Administration program at UTN, Ecuador, connecting data-driven methods with business applications.
Beyond my academic work, I enjoy cycling, swimming, running, photography, drawing, and learning languages. I speak Spanish, English, German, Korean, and French, and I value connecting with people, cultures, and perspectives from around the world. My international experiences have strengthened my appreciation for cultural diversity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the exchange of ideas, continuing to inspire my curiosity both in research and in life.
