Angell Field Ancients
Greetings AFA types, both from our current AFA mail list as well as from the wider net cast a year ago by Stu Harris and Roger Jackman.
We plan to get-together for lunch on Saturday, March 13, at 12:30, roughly the anniversary of last year’s memorial gathering, tree planting, and plaque dedication in honor of AFA founders. The event will be held at Ray’s Grill, which is housed within the Graduate Community Center building along Escondido Road between Campus Drive and Stanford Avenue. The map below shows the closest unrestricted parking areas. No cost, but you have to buy or bring your own lunch; beer they have, bringing wine is OK.
At 10:30 AM, prior to gathering for lunch, some of us will walk up to the Dish area to visit the grove of trees planted last year in honor of the AFA Founders. Those who wish to join the walk should meet in front of the grill.
During and following lunch we expect to have a great program of slides and videos from recent years and from the distant past. One real gem is a set of slides covering our first Bike and Run event in 1977 near Angell field. A photo from this event is attached. How many of you recognize Don Peterson, John Bunnell, and Dave Stevenson in the foreground and Dwain Fullerton and Bruce Hinchcliffe in the background? Come and see yourself and your friends at this 1977 event, or more recently in November 2005 during our last day of running in the Stanford stadium. Watch some short video clips covering a time trial in the stadium in the mid 1970s, farewell (to Chris Spain) runs on the trails back in 1990, post-run sessions at the Woodside Bakery (comments by Richard Schupbach), and much more.
For more on this event, consult the AFA website at: http://sites.google.com/site/afastanford/Home/mar13-2010event. A menu for the grill and parking info is attached; program info will soon be available on the AFA site.
If you can attend the March 13 event, please send an email to Stu Harris, at stuart.harris@sbcglobal.net, so we can anticipate our needs for space, etc.
