SPOTLIGHT ON COMPARATIVE BIOSCIENCES

Welcome Dr. Aditi Das

Dr. Aditi Das first came to Illinois when, after completing her PhD in Chemistry from Princeton University, she began postdoctoral research with Dr. Stephen Sligar at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Now, the new assistant professor of comparative biosciences is a Beckman Institute affiliate.

Much of her research focuses on the membrane proteins that produce pain and inflammation responses and are key pharmaceutical targets. A current study explores the use of nanostructure scaffolding to maintain the integrity of the membrane proteins cells so can be more easily examined. As a biochemist, Dr. Das says interdisciplinary opportunities at Illinois have a strong appeal. An additional advantage of a being at a veterinary college is that collaboration on animal models can address the need for better pain medication in a variety of species.

Dr. Das, who is herself allergic to ibuprofen, is well aware of the potential benefits of her work, which could lead to the reduction or elimination of side effects, and improved precision in dosages.

Currently at work setting up her lab, Dr. Das looks forward to working with graduate students as well as co-teaching in the professional curriculum.

Dec 8, 2011- Aditi gives invited talk at I.I.T. Delhi, Department of Chemistry. Her host is Prof. Sameer Sapra.

Nov 28,2011- Aditi becomes an affiliate faculty at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. She is part of the 3D Micro- and Nanosystems research group in the Molecular and Electronics Nanostructures (M&ENS) and HABITS theme.

Nov 17, 2011- Eric Magnetta, MCB undergraduate junior joins Das lab. He will be working on the bacterial mimic of epoxygenase, the CYP102 F87V mutant.

Nov 15, 2011- Snehita Sri Varma, graduate student at the Department of Bioengineering joins Das lab as a research assistant. She will be working on mechanistic understanding of thromboxane synthase.

Oct 15, 2011- Dr. Aditi Das established a new research Lab, Laboratory of Membrane Bound Metallo-enzymes at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Department of Comparative Biosciences.

Das Joins Beckman Institute

Published Monday, November 28, 2011

Aditi Das is a new faculty member at the Beckman Institute in the 3D Micro- and Nanosystems group. She will also be a member of the new initiative called Health: Attitudes, Biology, Information, Technology, Society (HABITS). Das earned a Ph.D. from Princeton in Chemistry and did postdoctoral research with Beckman faculty memberStephen Sligar. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Biosciences whose research investigates membrane proteins using biophysical techniques.
