Family Group Pedigrees for the Brewer lines of Adam Brouwer (1620-1692) of New Netherland

The following participants in the Brewer Surname DNA Project have been assigned, by Y-DNA Test Kit Number, to the ADAM BROUWER LINE, color coded Plum in the Y-DNA results chart located at:

These BREWERs have matching genetic signatures often at a significant 37 marker resolution or better and together with the genealogical paper trail (presented in brief outline below) for descendants of the various family patriarchs leading to Adam Brouwer (1620-1692). A Y-DNA Primer and the derivation of the Ancestral Y-DNA of Adam Brouwer from the modal value of the complete set of tested participants is described on the page “Adam’s DNA” and a reference signature is posted below. The Y-DNA signatures of the participants have been divided into sub-groups by Chris Chester based upon traditional genealogical research and the signatures of the participants within the subgroups are provided below. Signature Markers that differ from the modal value (differ from the ancestral signature) are highlighted in yellow and represent random mutations in the Y-DNA transmission. These mutations can sometimes, but not always, be used to identify family groupings as is indicated in the similarity between Sub-group 2 (Nicholas) and Sub-group 4 (Jeremiah) that supports the conjectured ancestral links between them (Jeremiah as grandson of Nicholas) that have yet to be documented with a traditional paper trail.

Importantly, links are provided taking the viewer to the Brouwer Genealogy Database page that contains the associated five generation descent lineage charts for each sub-group and on those charts one may further click on any of the blocks to then go to the genealogical data base providing detailed, sourced genealogical information, including siblings and the mother’s data. Within the sub-group Pedigrees below, the sons of Adam that have a living descendant that has been tested are indicated in Italicized bold -- the Most Recent Common Ancestors (MRCA) in the various lineages are designated in Bold.

Sharing research and family information amongst the matched members has helped some individuals extend their pedigree three or more generations and to clear up mistaken connections, while others have discovered connections they were previously unaware of. DNA testing has proved to be a fruitful genealogical tool for all of us.

37 marker results confirm he is a descendant of Adam Brouwer. His match of 36/37 to kits 30185 and 157021 indicate he is likely descended from Pieter Adamsz Brouwer but documentation from Samuel C. Brower to the founder of this branch is currently unavailable. The known lineage is:

Sub-Group 5- Jeremiah John Brower (1815-1887). Jeremiah John Brower (1815-1887) is first found in Cass Co., Indiana in 1850, and from there went to Lucas Co., Iowa. A descendant who has participated in the Brewer DNA Project is shown to have descended from Adam Brouwer. The ancestry from Jeremiah John back to Adam Brouwer has not yet been found, but it likely goes through either Adam's son Nicholas, or Adam's son Abraham. Sharing the common Y-DNA mutation (13->14) with Sub-Groups 4 and 2 favors Nicholas over Abraham in as much as Abraham’s descendant in Sub-Group 9 does not show any such mutation.

One descendant has participated in the Brewer DNA Project and the results show that the participant is a descendant of Adam Brouwer. The line from Henry back to Adam, however, has not yet been discovered.

Sub-Group 7- Peter Brewer (Pennsylvania to Kentucky). Peter Brewer is first found in Westmoreland Co. Pa., and soon went to Hardin Co., Kentucky. One descendant has participated in the Brewer DNA Project and has demonstrated that he is descended from Adam Brouwer. The ancestry from Peter back to Adam has not yet been found. The tested descendants of sub-group nos. 6 & 7 (Henry & Peter Brewer) match on 36 of 37 markers, and when the fact that both ancestors originated in Westmoreland Co., Pa., it has to be concluded that the two (Henry & Peter) share a recent common ancestor. They are likely both descended from the same son of Adam Brouwer, and possibly one that has not yet been represented among the other participants.

The participation of a confirmed descendant in the Brewer DNA Project has demonstrated that the descendant (and therefore his ancestor, William Brewer) is descended from Adam Brouwer. Sub-Group 9- Abraham Brouwer (ca. 1667). Abraham Adamsz Brouwer was born before 1667 at Gowanus, Kings Co., Long Island, and possibly in 1662. Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:96) states his baptism as May 18, 1662 at Brooklyn. However, transcriptions of the Brooklyn records only record Abraham's brother Adam as having been baptized on this date. Perhaps Hoffman had access to another, perhaps original record of the Brooklyn Dutch Church, in which case Abraham and Adam would have been twins, born in 1662. Abraham was certainly 21 years old by time he took the oath in Sep. 1687.
