Celebrate and Communicate
Adapted from: LSF – Engaging Students in Sustainable Action Projects
Celebrate small steps, milestones along the way, and at the end of the project. Check in with your goals for the project (Steps 1 and 6) to celebrate different types of accomplishments like a challenging but effective discussion, newly developed (and practiced) skills, or the new found support of someone who was previously a barrier.
Celebrations may take the form of verbal congratulations to each group member, or high fives! A special gathering to talk about the success. Group rewards could involved eating and drinking. Find some way to make sure that celebration becomes part of the Action Learning Group Project practice.
A part of celebrating your actions might be to THANK all those involved in your learning journey. Inviting these people to join in your celebration parties might be a good idea, however sometimes a more formal letter or email of thanks is important. Taking time to acknowledge all those who had some had in getting you and your team to this place is a great way of celebrating.
Communicate at important steps along the process with those who are beyond your team. Let people know which issue you have selected and why. Make sure you describe what you want to achieve by the end of your project. Share your action plans. Describe any interesting situations or research that you have discovered along the way. Share your successes (and failures). Let people know that you and your team have taken ACTION!
Forms of communication may include:
There are many different ways to communicate your project ideas, actions, and successes.
Of course, communication WITHIN your team is always important. Make some time to discuss preferred modes of communication and make sure that everyone is comfortable with your choices. Communicating with your leader is also useful as they will have alternative ideas, suggestions, and helpful hints for you.
