Welcome

Genealogy. This site documents an incomplete family history. A branch of the Chapman family and of the Back family of Kent, England with links to ancestors in Scotland, Canada and elsewhere.

Me and the dog. Pictured at home (the metal Nissen Hut ) on Hothfield Camp in 1949.

The history starts with my parents, born in the 1920's, and the family tree extends back to the 1700's. Our family today is like most others, all ages and all types, a wide variety of professions, some geographic spread, and so on. As we step back in time we find larger family units, shorter lives, different problems and opportunities, emigrations and returns, and yesterdays trades and professions. We have millers and farm workers, a railway locomotive builder and iron foundry workers, a horse omnibus driver, confectioners, servants and masters, and more. There are also some mysteries.

I have tried to present family information in family unit groups with highlighted links to ancestors and descendants. There is an alphabetic list of family names and birth dates, again with links for key individuals to their family unit page.

I will also add copies of my small collection of family records; photographs, copies of birth marriage and death certificates, news clips and so on.
