How does one describe a place of constant civil war, led by dark wizards, evil priestesses, maniacal sadists, and glowering Dark Warriors, all in service of an unseen Khan who is reputedly no longer human enough to walk among mortals?
Call it "Home," to many millions of suffering (and quite a few gleefully contented) souls.
Several Barons or Baronesses serve Srazor, the Khan, who has not been seen for over a century. He rules by proxy from Black Mesa, a smoking rock that rises from The Inland Sea. At the Mesa's feet a Citadel clusters, once a fishing village until a rock fell from the sky sometime in the distant past. Soon after a Lord Srazor appeared, a man of iron will who murdered anyone who would not bow to him and his patron, a Deity known as The Dancer. He conquered every settlement along the Sea, coerced the Stinkers and Arnites to ally with him, and planned to move down the rivers to the Great Ocean until the exiles from his lands who built Windamere stopped him cold. Land-locked, The Empire constantly searches for a way to trade and conquer beyond its borders.
What follows are the names and what we know about the leaders who serve the Khan.
Ruler of Northwatch, at the tip of the Khan's spear thrust into the land of the Northmen. He's a fearsome but ostensibly charming man, at least not when not commanding the living dead. He travels beyond the Empire and is for many the public, and seemingly reasonable, face of a mad land. Those who have endured his wrath have other tales.
He is known as "The Bone Thief" among the Northmen, whose ancestors are said to have been resurrected to serve in Demadris' Spectral Legion.
Demadris is over 100 years old, but he looks to be a hale and handsome 50-something, his long white hair shining, a contrast with the dark colors he favors, in robes or armor.
He has no known wives, but he does have a son he is grooming for leadership. What role that may be is one of Demadris' most closely kept secrets.
We in Windamere know little about him beyond his being a powerful mage. He is served by a warrior named Count Meliadon, a Shish'ari (a gray-skinned, white-haired being who otherwise resembles a Rindalar). Harloon is known to be a bitter rival of Baron Demadris.
He seems to have an unhealthy interest in The Place Not Named, dangerous even to an evil mortal such as himself. His fastness lies somewhere to the west of the Stinker-Lands, and many of them serve in his armies.
Blind priestess of The Dancer and sister to Demadris. She sits beside him in council and though rumors abound, she laughs at the notion they are lovers or that Kalos is her son.
Of all the Priestesses of The Empire, she is one of the few who can ascend The Mesa to speak to The Khan or stand in the presence of The Dancer. Other sighted humans who have tried have gone mad, and whispered stories say she blinded herself in order to be able to endure the ordeal. Like Demadris, she is over a century old.
Warrior-Priests called The Black Hand often accompany her on her errands. She is stately and polite to foreigners but colder than her brother. She's never at a loss for tempting others to betray their oaths for power or riches.
Kalos lacks his father's ability to cover his evil with a smooth demeanor, as he's the son of Demadris and one of the Khan's two known daughters, who are whispered to be progeny of Srazor and The Dancer Herself.
Kalos is thought to be young. He is brash and, unlike his Aunt or Father, no mage or priest. He commands human armies instead, but he has several magical items of great power taken from those he has defeated.
He rides a black stallion said to be from The Abyss, immune to arrows and blades. Only the armies of Windamere have halted him, the one time he led a force against the Kingdom, some 10 years ago.
He has served as a diplomat in times of peace, even in the court of Queen Arana, whom he actively courts.
One of the Khan's most powerful and least trusted Lieutenants. He who may be Losargon the Dragon, which could explain why he often travels alone, as a handsome red-headed warrior. A glimpse into his pale blue eyes shows fires. When he is displeased, the blue eyes turn red and mayhem follows.
He's not a human, though he fancies himself a gentleman, gourmand, and patron of the Arts. He does good deeds when it pleases him or if he likes someone. He trades recipes for food with Pol of Many Colours, who he "likes, but still plans to eat whole."
He claims to be ancient, older than the Empire. He travels on occasion with The Oracle, an unnamed blind woman of advanced age, great dignity, powers of divination, yet singular malevolence. Like Jirella Lorsan, she's thought to be one who can stand in the presence of The Khan and The Dancer. She loves the Baron unconditionally, though he captured her in her youth. He dotes on her in a way both strange and touching.
