This is a video about the five main elements of a story: setting, plot, characters, conflict and theme. The video introduces the topics included in the Virginia Reading SOL standard 6.5a. It was created to introduce 6th grade students to the ideas of a story before embarking on a year of reading stories. Ideally, this video would be played prior to reading the first story in class. It should be a review as students have been introduced to setting, plot, characters, conflict and themes in previous years.
After playing this video, the teacher might ask students write down the five main elements of a story then identify their favorite story, book, or movie. Then the students would write down what the five elements are in their favorite story. They might also be asked to read a short story and pick out the elements from that story.
