For example, a pair of cards might show something about government. One card would represent government in China, Korea, or India. The other would represent government in Japan. You will need to skim the sections in the textbook to find your answer.

You have to finish reading the chapter, but there is much less writing to do. By the end of the assignment, you should have read the entire chapter. You do NOT need to write the Chinese symbols in part two. Read the chapter to figure out which inventions are being described. This is due tomorrow as well.

This is due Friday at the beginning of class, so you will work on it today and tomorrow.

Step 1: Open the following files:

Step 2: Read a section of the textbook. Look at the placards that go with that section. Pay special attention to the description of the item shown on the placard.

Step 3: In the box for the placard in your worksheet, record information about that discovery or invention:

Here is which placards go with each section:

Step 4: Read the next section of the textbook and continue the process.

By tomorrow, have at least the box about the compass complete.

Some of the inventions/discoveries are a little hard to understand. I have videos about most of them on the Chapter 21 padlet. I strongly encourage you to watch them.

2.  How about a Gimkit to see what you have learned?

3. You are going to do an assignment to summarize chapter 20. I want you to be creative and use a different app - NOT GOODNOTES! Canva gives you lots of options. You may also use paper if you wish.

Here's what you need to do:

Agriculture, trade and commerce, and urbanization all helped make China rich. What you need to do is choose the one that you think was most important in increasing their economy.  All three answers are correct; it's really your opinion as to which was the biggest part.

Once you have decided, create a flyer/poster saying the part of society (agriculture, commerce, or urbanization) you believe most improved the medieval Chinese economy (made the country rich).

Your poster needs to meet the following requirements:

You can create this digitally in any app you have on your iPad EXCEPT GoodNotes, or you may use paper.

I am leaving these directions pretty open because I want to see what you can do. When I grade it, I will be looking to see if you really understand how your choice (agriculture, business, or the growth of cities) changed China's economy.

To summarize:

Choose the one aspect (agriculture, trade/commerce or urbanization) that you feel most helped improve China's economy. Give it a title, write a slogan, and explain (in detail) three reasons how that aspect made China wealthy. Be sure that all of your writing is original. I have read the text book many times...I recognize it when I see it!

Your flyer/advertisement is due on Thursday after we return.

For more information, or just another way of me explaining what to do, please go to www.edpuzzle.com. There is a video there about the assignment.

If you want to spend the class time today working on a study guide or studying for tomorrow's test, that is fine. You might also want to watch the videos on the chapter 20 padlet.

2. I will storytime the highlights of section 3.  Follow along and highlight your textbook.

3. I have a crossword puzzle for you. All the information is found in chapter 18. Go through it and answer all the questions you know first. Then go back and use the text to find the answers for the others. This will help you review. The puzzle is due Monday.

4. STUDY! Your AYRY is tomorrow, and your test is on Monday.

WEDNESDAY 2/28

1. Open the file in Showbie called HSS Ch 18 African Art. I am going to project an image on the screen. You may either sketch it quickly, or you may take a photo, crop it, and import it in to the file. Then, you need to write down three things you notice about it. As a class, we will discuss what material was used to create the art. We will also discuss the art's purpose. Take notes on all of these.

2. Submit your work to Showbie when we are finished. (If we run out of time, we will finish it tomorrow.)

3. You have the rest of the period to work on and finish 18.2 and 18.3. You are going to have to do 18.3 as a solo-flight. I will storytime it tomorrow. You can also use the video on www.edpuzzle.com to help you. They are due tomorrow.

4. You have the remainder of the class to prepare for Friday's Chapter 18 AYRY and Monday's test. Download the flashcards and work on a study guide. Watch the videos on the chapter 18 padlet. You may also watch the videos from this week's performances.

INDEPENDENT WORK - Finish 18.2 and 18.3, and study!

TUESDAY 2/27

1. You will perform the griot tale of Sundiata today. You have three minutes to get organized. The groups will perform in order so that the story makes sense.

While the groups perform, listen and try to make connections between this traditional story and Disney's retelling of The Lion King. (There is a video on the padlet that goes over this as well.)

2. When the performances are done, you will have the remainder of class to complete 18.2. We will do 18.3 on Wednesday, and they are both due on Thursday.

Remember, your test is on Monday, so your AYRY is on Friday. Both will be third trimester grades. Study guides and flashcards are ready for you.

MONDAY 2/26

Good morning!

1. Turn in 18.1. We will correct it and then you will need to turn it back in.

2. I am going to play you a recording of a griot. Pay attention to how he uses his voice to add to the story and how the music enhances the performance. You may also look at past griot performances on the chapter 18 padlet.

3. Today, you will have the rest of the period to work with your group.

Each group will have three roles. One person will serve as the griot, or the person who reads the script. It does not need to be memorized, but it should sound rehearsed. One or two people will serve as the actors; they will be acting out the movements in the story, but they will not use any words or sounds. The final person will be the rhythm maker, and will create a rhythm that enhances the story without ever coming to the forefront. You may not use your iPad for the rhythm.

Your script is divided into two parts, and when you reach the second part, you must all switch roles. You may not have the same job for each half of the play. For example, if you were the rhythm maker for the first part, you must be the actor or the griot for the second part.

When you get with your groups, the first thing you must do is assign the parts for both halves of your script. Then open the script and scroll to the right scene.

Next, you need to rehearse. Be sure you know how to pronounce the words in your script. Practice what movements you are going to make, and determine the rhythm you will create.

During the presentations, the performance artists and the griots will stand, but the rhythm maker may sit at the front table. At the halfway point of your presentation, quickly change positions and continue.

You will be performing TOMORROW. When you rehearse, you need to remain pretty quiet. No props are allowed. Rhythm makers may not use anything more than two fingers to tap the desk.

4. When your group is done practicing, you will need to begin working on 18.2. You must READ the entire section before beginning to work on the questions. 18.2 and 18.3 will be due on Thursday.

Your chapter 18 test is next Monday (sorry!). It will be a grade for trimester 3. Make sure you prepare well for it.--

FRIDAY 2/23

Happy Friday!

1. We will go over the Ch. 17 test. Cruz, Grace, Ford, Justin, Aiden, Gavin D, Naledi, Braden, Rosie, Adonis, Jayden, Aaron, Caleb, James, Mallory, and Violet still need to take it.

2. Turn in 18.1. We will correct it. I will also storytime it, as well as the intro. (If you were absent, turn it in by Tuesday).

3. Today, you are going to start a project where you are going to become a griot and tell the story of Sundiata, the Lion King of Mali. I will place you in one of six groups. Each group has one part of the story that is found in Showbie. Pay attention to the top of each page and make sure you are rehearsing your assigned scene.

Each group will have three roles. One person will serve as the griot, or the person who reads the script. It does not need to be memorized, but it should sound rehearsed. One or two people will serve as the actors; they will be acting out the movements in the story, but they will not use any words or sounds. The final one or two people will be the rhythm maker, and will create a rhythm that enhances the story without ever coming to the forefront.

Today, you need to assign parts for both halves. Monday, I will give you about 20 minutes to work with your group. You will be performing on TUESDAY. Performances will be videotaped and compiled on a padlet.

There are examples of griots on the Chapter 18 Padlet.

5. The test for chapter 18 is going to be on Monday, 3/4. The study guide and flashcards are ready.

THURSDAY 2/22

Jazz Band kiddos, good luck at your festival today, and don't forget to have a good time!  I will have you all make up your test tomorrow.

It's test day today!

If you were absent yesterday, be sure you make up the AYRY. Directions are in Showbie.

1. Turn in a study guide if you answered any of the questions.

2. We will play a Blooket to warm up those brain cells.

3. Take the test. Use the audio version if that helps you, or if you tend to rush through and not read all of your answer choices.

4. Chapter 18 is what I call the "so what?" chapter. This is where we make connections between the West Africa of the past with our modern world today. We are going to look at art, music, and dance to see how their culture has influenced ours. We will complete 18 intro together in class tomorrow, so skip it for now.

5. Read and complete Section 18.1. It is homework if you do not finish it in class today.

WEDNESDAY 2/21

1. We will play a round of Blooket or Gimkit.

2. It's time for your AYRY. As usual, it is in Showbie. There are 20 questions from the chapter, and three more that have you analyze a venn diagram.

3. Don't forget to complete your Quizizz! That needs to be done by tomorrow.

4. Get some headphones and log in to www.edpuzzle.com. There is a video there that you are required to watch:

There are 9 questions that you have to answer as you are watching. This should be done by Friday morning.

5. STUDY - Your test is tomorrow!

TUESDAY 2/20

1. Turn in 17.5-17.7. We will correct it, and you will turn it back in.

2. I am going to storytime some of the chapter, just to make sure you didn't miss the most important details. Be sure to highlight the chapter and follow along

3. We will play a Blooket or a Gimkit to help you review the chapter.

4. I have a Quizizz for you to help you review. This will go in the gradebook...do your best. You have 3 tries (I think!)

Your AYRY is tomorrow, and your test will be Thursday. Spend the rest of the class studying.

MONDAY 2/19 - NO SCHOOL (President's Day)

FRIDAY 2/16

Woo hoo! We made it to Friday!

1. Turn in 17.2-17.4. We will correct it and turn it back in.

2. Finish chapter 17. The most important part are the answers to the questions. Finish all of those first, and then go back to work on the placards. This is due Tuesday at the beginning of class, so if you do not finish in class, it is homework. 😩

Here are the directions again, in case you forgot what to do:

Answer the questions on the right side of the chart for each section; these answers are found in the section you just read.THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART AND SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE YOU WORRY ABOUT THE PLACARDS.

3. If you finish early, download the flashcards for this chapter, work on a chapter 17 study guide, or explore the chapter 17 padlet. Your test is on Thursday.

See you Tuesday!

THURSDAY 2/15

In Showbie, under "assignments", there is a place to sign up for your requested small group for our field trip in March. Everyone will need to complete this, even if you are not attending the trip for some reason.

1. Turn in 17.1. We will correct it and you need to turn it back in.

2. You will have today and Thursday to complete the reading and questions for chapter 17. Sections 2, 3 and 4 are due at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Here is how to do the work:

In Showbie, open the file titled HSS TCI Ch 17.2-17.4. Export that to GoodNotes.

In Showbie, open the Ch 17 Placards in GoodNotes. You will use these just to look at pictures and read the captions.

Open the textbook in Showbie. READ chapter 17, section 2, which is about how Islam influenced religion in West Africa.

Go back to the questions in GoodNotes and answer the questions on the right side of the chart; these answers are found in the section you just read. (The answers to the questions are the most important part - do these first!)

For the column on the left, open the pictures in GoodNotes and look at the placards that are listed for that section.

To make things easier, here are the pictures you will need to look at for each section:

Section 2: A, B, C, D, E, F, H

Section 3: C, E, G

Section 4: A, B, F

Section 5: A, B, F

Section 6: A, D, H

Section 7: B, C, D, E, F, G, H

What can you see in the picture that shows Islam's influence for this particular topic? For example, placard A shows Islam's influence on religion; it shows two children in front of a mosque. That's what you would write for A. For example: A - shows a mosque. You will repeat yourself a lot. Sometimes, the same thing is found in several pictures.

When you have finished section 2, continue on to section 3 and section 4 repeat the process.

Each time you complete a section, you will need to examine the pictures again to look for elements of the influence of Islam.

Today, you should at least finish sections 2, 3, and 4. THEY ARE DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS TOMORROW!

Tomorrow, you will finish the chapter. On Tuesday, we will review. Your AYRY is on Wednesday, and your test will be on Thursday. Study guides and flashcards are ready for you.

You have all class today and tomorrow to finish the chapter. The directions, placards, and questions are all found in Showbie.

2. Complete the Ch. 16 AYRY in Showbie. There are 23 questions; the twenty from the chapter plus three that require you to analyze a map.

3. Work on your storyboard explaining the gold and salt trade. The writing is the most important part!!! Make sure your writing explains the following:

where gold came from / where salt came from

why each item was important

how the trade was done

how each side (including Ghana) benefitted from this system.

If you have trouble doing your writing in Storyboardthat, you have another option. Create the pictures in Storyboardthat. Save your storyboard WITHOUT any writing.

Tap on your storyboard.

Tap "download."

Choose "pdf".

Wait for it to process, and open it in Goodnotes.

   6. review the main ideas from the previous chapters.

   7. get headphones and watch any videos on the chapter 16 padlet

FRIDAY 2/9

It's Friday!

1. Turn in 16.4-16.5. We will correct it and you will turn it back in.

Well, not BUY them, but write them! And not really comics, but storyboards. And not on Wednesdays, but also on Fridays. You get the idea, right?

2. You are going to use a website called StoryBoardThat or a comic book app to create a 6-frame storyboard explaining the gold and salt trade. When directors/writers plan a movie, they start with a storyboard where they describe the major events. This is what you are doing; imagine you are creating a movie to explain the gold and salt trade. What would be the six important scenes to explain how it worked? You need to have six frames and captions. Make sure your writing explains the following:

(There are videos on the chapter 16 padlet that explain the process of the trade, in case you need a refresher!)

Make your project as creative as you can, but be sure to be historically accurate. It is not meant to be homework. You will work on it Monday after the AYRY and again on Tuesday after the test. It will be due on Wednesday at the beginning of class.

Here is what a completed project looks like (but I deleted the words). You may use this as an example, but create your own project!

Some things to know if you use StoryboardThat:

Sign in to Storyboard that by using Clever.  STORYBOARDTHAT MAY NOT SAVE YOUR WORK AUTOMATICALLY! LOOK FOR THE SAVE BUTTON AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT. If you find storyboardthat hard to write in, copy and paste your writing from GoodNotes into the text boxes.

Another option is to use Storyboardthat to create the pictures.

Save your storyboard WITHOUT any writing.

Save and exit

At the top right, click on "my dashboard"

Tap on your storyboard

At the bottom, tap "download images/PowerPoint"

Choose "High Resolution Image"

Save image

Open the storyboard picture in Goodnotes.

Complete your text boxes in Goodnotes.

Your chapter 16 AYRY is Monday. Be sure you are prepared.

THURSDAY 2/8

It's Thursday!

1. Turn in 16.2 and 16.3 to Showbie.

2. We will correct it and you will turn it back in.

3. STORYTIME! Read and complete 16.4 and 16.5 - both are due tomorrow.

Tomorrow, you are going to begin a project where you create a storyboard explaining the gold/salt trade. In Showbie, you will see an assignment called "Ch 16 Storyboard Text Boxes." Before you will be allowed to begin the art portion of the project, you have to complete the writing. It would be a good idea to start it today or tonight.

WEDNESDAY 2/7

Good morning!

1. We will go over yesterday's activity with the trade for gold and salt.

2. STORYTIME! We will continue through sections 2 and 3 of chapter 16 today. Both sections need to be done by tomorrow, so it is homework if you waste your time and are not finished by the end of the class period.

If you do finish early, you may watch the videos that are also on the Ch 16 Padlet, or start working on a study guide for chapter 16, and download the flashcards as well. Your test on this chapter is on Tuesday, 2/13.

TUESDAY 2/6

Happy Tuesday! In case nobody has told you yet this morning, I think that....

1. Turn in your chapter 16 intro / 16.1. We will correct it before you turn it back in.

2. We are having an activity today which will simulate how the trans-Saharan gold and salt trade was conducted.

You will be from either North Africa, Wangara (the forest), or Ghana. North Africa and Wangara will each begin with items to trade. Ghana, you begin with nothing except location and armies. All the trade is conducted silently.

The goal of the game is for your team to end up with the most PAIRS of items. For example, if you have 20 "A" tokens and 4 "B" tokens, how many PAIRS do you have? Only 4. If you have 5 "A" tokens and 5 "B" tokens, you would have 5 pairs of tokens. You would beat the first example. It's not about having the most individual tokens, but having the greatest number of pairs. Keep that in mind as we play.

***For my absent students, you are excused from the class activity. Spend time today exploring the padlet instead.

3. You do not have any homework tonight. Your test on chapter 16 will be next Tuesday, 2/13. The study guide is available in Showbie, and the flashcards are ready in the flashcards app (akers hss) as well as in Quizlet. It's not too early to begin studying.

MONDAY 2/5

1. We will correct the Ch 15 test from yesterday. Ryan, Henry, Raiden, Thomas, Gio, Adonis, Gavin B, Caleb, and Julia still need to take it.

If you are doing test corrections, they are due by Wednesday.

2. It's time to move on to chapter 16, which is about the early kingdom of Ghana. As a class, we will complete the chapter 16 intro, and on your own, you need to complete section 16.1.

Both are due tomorrow. Turn 16.1 in to Showbie when you have it done.

This is also a fairly short chapter. The test will be next Tuesday.

3. If you finish early, work on iReady, explore the chapter 16 padlet, or complete work from another class.

FRIDAY 2/2

It's test day!

Don't worry; I think you're ready.

1. Turn in 15.3-15.4. I will correct it myself.

2. Turn in your study guide if you have one.

3. We will play a speed-round of Blooket.

4. Take the test as usual. We are using Illuminate again, and I think it is working in both Chrome and Safari. There is also an audio version on akers7.

5. It's time to move on to chapter 16, which is about the early kingdom of Ghana. You need to read the intro by Monday. There is no writing to complete, but I need you tp READ IT! You will find it in Showbie.

6. You may work on iReady, complete work from another class or silent read once you finish the test and reading Ch 16 Intro.

THURSDAY 2/1

1. I will give you 10 minutes to complete last night's work, or to study
for the AYRY.

2. Turn in 15.3-15.4 to Showbie. We will correct them and turn it back in.

3. We will do a Gimkit or a Blooket to review.

4. You have the AYRY today. As usual, it is in Showbie. There are only the regular twenty questions this time.

5. Study! Your test is tomorrow. Download the flashcards (akers hss chapter 15). Work on a study guide. Reread the chapter. Listen to the storytime files in www.edpuzzle.com. Learn what you got wrong on the AYRY. There are also review games in Showbie that you can use to study.

6. If there is any time left, we will play some Trashketball.

Tonight's homework is to study.

WEDNESDAY 1/31

1. Turn in 15.1-15.2. We will correct it and you will turn it back in.

2. STORY TIME!

Open 15.3-15.4 in Goodnotes. Highlight the textbook as I go through it.

3. You need to finish the chapter. Sections 3 and 4 are due tomorrow, and you will also have your AYRY.

4. If you are done early, download the flashcards and work on a study guide. Your test for this chapter is on Friday.

HW - study. You have the chapter 15 AYRY tomorrow, and your test is on Friday.

TUESDAY 1/30

MORNING! Happy Tuesday.

1. Turn in your Crusades recruitment poster. (From Canva: press the share button, then choose download. Select PDF and export it to Showbie. If that doesnt' work, take a screenshot and turn it in to Showbie that way.)

2. Turn in your Africa Setting the Stage assignment. We will quickly correct it and turn it back in.

3. STORYTIME!

We are going to begin chapter 15 today. As a class, we will go over the intro and section 1. This is a really short chapter. We will finish the chapter on Wednesday, review on Thursday (along with your AYRY), and your test is Friday. Trust me; it's a short chapter and you can handle this pace.

4. On your own (or with a partner), you will need to read the intro (read only) and section 1. This is due tomorrow, so it is homework if you do not finish in class. Remember, you have the storytime videos on edpuzzle (sign in with Clever) that are there to help you, especially if you are absent!

MONDAY 1/29

Good morning!

Today, we all need to welcome back Adonis Hudson. He was at Akers last year, and he must have missed us all so much, because today he returns. He is in Mrs. Pond's homeroom. While he is not new to our school, he is new to how we do things in 7th grade, so please reach out and make sure he feels comfortable.

1. We will correct Friday's test. Marcelis and Rosie still need to finish it. As we go over it, pay special attention to the ones you got wrong. If you are doing test corrections, they are due by Wednesday.

2. We are leaving the Middle East and heading to Western Africa beginning today.

It's important that you remember and understand the Muslim Empire, because it had a huge impact on this region of Africa. Like always, we will first learn about the land and the climate, since that shapes every society.

3. In Showbie, you will find the Setting the Stage - Africa assignment. Use the maps found in Showbie to complete this assignment. It is due tomorrow, so if you do not finish it in class, you have homework.

There are four maps in Showbie.

The largest one (green, physical features) is the one you are going to use when looking for rivers and natural land forms.

There is a smaller map on that one that shows the four regions of Africa.

At the bottom left, there are two maps that are connected. The one with lots of red shows the vegetation zones,

and the one next to it shows the locations of three major kingdoms in West Africa.

Sometimes, you are going to have to combine the information found on one or more maps to answer the questions.

There is a storytime video on www.edpuzzle.com where I teach the lesson and explain the questions. Use it if you get stuck.

AT HOME:

Finish Setting the Stage

Finish your Crusades poster

FRIDAY 1/26

Do your "Happy it's Friday" dance!  (Don't forget to wear red!)

It's TEST DAY! Are you ready? I hope so.

1. Turn in a study guide if you completed any questions.

2. We will play a Blooket to get those brain cells moving!

3. Test time! Illuminate should be working in SAFARI this time.  From your iPad homescreen, swipe down, type in illuminate and tap the link.  There is an audio version on akers7. If you have questions during the test, please raise your hand and ask.

4. When you are finished, finish your Crusades recruitment poster. Remember the context; it is the year 1200. That means that at least the first two Crusades have already happened. (When you look for a map, look for the routes of the third crusade.) Also, your poster needs to have a serious tone. Resist the urge to make it funny. When you think that you are done, double check the directions; make sure you included everything you were supposed to include. The poster is due Tuesday.

5. If you have extra time, spend it working on iReady, silent reading or doing work from another class.

THURSDAY 1/25

1. We will play a Blooket or Gimkit to review.

2. You have the Ch. 12 AYRY today. There are twenty regular questions, plus three that require you to analyze a map. You will take this in Showbie as usual.

3. After your AYRY, begin your Crusades poster. REREAD THE DIRECTIONS and get started. You will have class time tomorrow after the test as well. The poster is due on Tuesday.

Your homework tonight is to study for tomorrow's test.

WEDNESDAY 1/24

1. Turn in 12.6 and 12.7. We will correct them and you will turn them back in.

2.  There are a couple of videos I want to play for you.

3. We will play a Blooket for review.

4. Starting tomorrow after your AYRY, you will begin a project that will summarize all that you have learned about the Crusades. You are going to create a persuasive recruitment poster that convinces peasants/knights/lords to join the Crusades. The directions are in Showbie, and I will go over it with you as well. It will be due on Tuesday next week. You can complete it on paper (and then turn a picture in to Showbie), or you may use an app on your iPad.

5. I think we will have time to play a game of trashketball as well.

If there is any time left, you have some options:

Work on a study guide

Play the review games in Showbie

Watch the videos on the Ch. 12 Padlet

Take this quizizz for review: The Crusades Quizizz

Your AYRY is tomorrow, and your test is on Friday. Your crusades poster is due on Tuesday.

TUESDAY 1/23

1. I have a Horrible Histories video for you today; this one is about some of the items that the Crusaders brought back to Europe with them.

2. Turn in 12.2, and 12.3-12.5. We will correct them and you will turn them back in.

3. There are two sections left. In 12.6 and 12.7, you will learn about the Mongols (with Genghis Khan), as well as the Ottomans, the Safavids, and the Mughals. And I have an oh-so-amazing memory tool for you to remember what the Mughals did.

4. You will have the remainder of class to complete 12.6-12.7.

5. If there is any time left, prepare for Thursday's AYRY and Friday's test. There are review games you can play in Showbie. You can also work on the extra credit and the chapter 12 study guide.

MONDAY 1/22

Good morning!

1. We have one last box to complete for section 2. You can turn it in either today or tomorrow - that's when we will correct it.

2. Story time!

I will storytime sections 3, 4, and 5 with you, which summarizes both the positive and negative effects of the Crusades on the Muslims, Christians, and the Jews.

3. Complete the information that you were unable to finish during storytime.

Due tomorrow: sections 3, 4, and 5.

4. Here's an opportunity for you to earn some more extra credit as well as prepare for the chapter 12 test.

Watch the Crash Course video about the Crusades. As you do so, complete the fill-in-the-blank worksheet that goes along with it. The worksheet is due by Friday morning and is in Showbie. You can earn up to 15 points of extra credit. The video can be found in edpuzzle - sign in with Clever.

5. You should also start working on a study guide - your test is on Friday, and the AYRY is on Thursday. Use your flashcards (flashcards app - plus - shared library - akers hss - search) and the text to help you.

6. If you have nothing else to do, explore the chapter 12 padlet or work on iReady.

FRIDAY 1/19

"Muslims are the fastest-growing religious group in the world. The growth and regional migration of Muslims, combined with the ongoing impact of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other extremist groups that commit acts of violence in the name of Islam, have brought Muslims and the Islamic faith to the forefront of the political debate in many countries. Yet many facts about Muslims are not well known in some of these places, and most Americans – who live in a country with a relatively small Muslim population – say they know little or nothing about Islam." - Pew Research

In 6th grade, you learned about the religions of Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism.  We began this year learning about the foundations and spread of Christianity. Because Islam is a major world religion that began in the Middle Ages, you study it in 7th grade.

You may use as many text boxes as you need in order to prove to me that you learned the information.  You will have a minimum of six boxes since you need to write about all of the topics.

You will have time to work on this tomorrow after your AYRY and Thursday after your test.

INDEPENDENT WORK

Study for tomorrow's test

Work a bit on your illuminated manuscript.  It is due on Friday.

TUESDAY 10/10

Welcome to Tuesday!

1.  Turn in 5.5, 5.6 and 5.7. We will quickly correct them and you will turn them back in.

2.  When we are done, you are going to begin your final project for this chapter.  You will be writing an illuminated manuscript about the role of the Church.   The assignment itself is found in Showbie.  There is an edpuzzle video that explains it as well.

You will choose 9 words from a word bank.  To choose your words, cross off the 15 words you DO NOT want to use. Then, with the words that are left, write 9 SHORT paragraphs (two-ish sentences each) defining and explaining the terms.   Then, organize the paragraphs so that the first letters of each paragraph, when read from top to bottom, spell THE CHURCH.  This is an acrostic poem, and most of you have written them before.

The word from the word bank DOES NOT need to be the first word of the paragraph.

Here are two short paragraphs AS EXAMPLES:

The Middle Ages were a time of great religious belief, and many people joined religious orders. St. Benedict founded the first monastery, and these monks lived secluded lives of work, study, and prayer.

Holy days were based on religious events, such as the birth of Jesus and events in the lives of saints. People celebrated by going to church and then feasting and playing games.

The overall point of this assignment is to prove to me that you understand the role the Church played in the lives of the people during the Middle Ages. Make sure your writing shows this.

3.  AFTER the paragraphs are written, you must illuminate (decorate) the "T" in the word "the"  and the first "C" in the word "church".  The decorations you add need to be related to the topic.  Here is a picture of what I mean by "illuminate":

If you do not want to draw your own illuminated T and C, you can google "illuminated T" and "illuminated C", and you will find many examples that you can use.

Here is a video that explains illuminated manuscripts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htrdQ24QcsI

When your project is complete, you will be posting it to a Padlet, so other students will be able to see your work.  Be sure you are completing a project about which you can be proud.

You may choose to complete the project on the iPad or on paper - your choice.

This project is due on Friday, so it is not homework at this time.

This is what a finished project looks like:   (Yes, I blurred out the writing because you need to be original!  All of the writing needs to be in your own words.

INDEPENDENT WORK

INDEPENDENT WORK

Complete and turn in your Sacrament matching assignment - due at the beginning of class tomorrow.

CARD MATCHING DIRECTIONS:  For this assignment, you are going to match 9 pictures cards with 9 description cards. You will need to read the ENTIRE description card, not just the title, or you are more likely to make an error.

When you are done, turn in the document to the Chapter 5 Card Matching Game assignment.

2.  We will play a speed round of Blooket to warm up your brains.

You got this!

3.  Test!  The test will be in Illuminate.  Use Chrome, and sign in with Google.  Read the test carefully.  If you do not understand what the question is asking, ASK!  Double check your answers before you hit submit.

MONDAY 9/25

IMPORTANT:  I’m so sorry to not be there today, but I got sick over the weekend and I’m not better yet.  It is SUPER important that you read your email and are clear about what you are supposed to do.  Please make me proud.

Good morning! No, we are not playing the feudalism game again today.  Sorry! I hope you enjoyed the game, but more importantly, I hope you have a better idea about what feudalism was and why it developed in Europe after the fall of Rome and the death of Charlemagne.

 I hope not!!!!!

1.  Section 4.1 needs to be turned in. Check Showbie to see if you already turned it in.  I will grade it myself.

2.  Double check that you turned in your Legacy of Rome.  There needs to be a digital picture in Showbie, and the paper copy, with your name on it, goes in the box on the back counter.

3.  In Showbie, you will see an assignment called Viking Invasion.  Please write an explanation of what you learned about feudalism from this activity.  You have 5 minutes to do this. If you do not finish in 5 minutes, you will need to finish it at home tonight. If you were absent on Friday, please write “absent” on the form and turn it back in.

4.  STORYTIME! Get some headphones or use your own. Go to Clever, go to Camarena's page, and click on EdPuzzle.  Find the Storytime file for 4.2.

You must listen to the entire storytime file.  Remember, edpuzzle gives me a report and shows me how long you watched it, and if you skipped any sections.

5.  You will have the remaining class time to finish section 2, which can be found in Showbie.  This is due tomorrow at the beginning of class.

6.  If you finish early, go to Showbie Ch 4 folder and click the link to watch the padlet videos.  I think you will find some that you enjoy!

INDEPENDENTLY:

Finish 4.2 - due tomorrow

Finish your followup to the viking invasion - due tomorrow

Other homework for tonight:  Your test on chapter four is Friday.  You should be working on the study guide now.  Study guides are available on Showbie.   You can earn up to 10 points of extra credit for doing the study guide.  It can't hurt - you get extra points AND you are studying for the test.

Don't forget to download the flashcards for chapter 4 as well.  Here is how:

Launch the flashcards app.

Press the + sign at the top right, then press shared library, then press search.

Type in akers hss and scroll down until you find the right deck.

Tap it, download it, and then return to the main screen.

Remember that your chapter 4 test will also have review questions from chapters 1-3, so you need to study them as well.

FRIDAY 9/22

DANGER!!!

Today, the Vikings will be attacking, and Captain America is not available to help you.

When you come in the room, the desks are not like usual.  THIS IS FOR TODAY ONLY!

Leave your iPad in your backpack.  Place your backpack along the wall under the white board in the front of the room.

Sit at any desk or the counter to start.  You will be moved around for the day's activity, so it doesn't matter where you begin.

During the activity today, you will experience the conditions in medieval England after the fall of Rome, and you will see why feudalism developed in the way that it did.

IMPORTANT: This is the first activity we are doing.  I am depending on you to follow directions and listen to  me.  It's going to be fun, but you must play by my rules.

AT HOME:

Tonight, make sure you have completed 4.1  You will turn it in Monday.  You can also turn in your Legacy of Rome project then since I didn't have you take your backpacks out today.

THURSDAY 9/21

1.  We will go over the answers from yesterday's social studies test. Thomas, Liam D., Jude, Bria, Kaiden, and Jackson still need to take it. When we go over the test, I will have you log back in to Illuminate so you can see which ones you missed.  You must follow along!

If you are going to do test corrections, they are due by Wednesday.

2.  Open your HSS folder in Goodnotes and make a chapter 4 notebook.

3.  Storytime! This is one of my very favorite chapters to teach.  It is about what happened in Europe after the fall of Rome.  I will even start you off with the quick video!  Then I will storytime the first section, and then you will read and answer the questions from Chapter 4, section 1.  This is due at the beginning of class Monday.

And if you are wondering...

TOMORROW!  It's going to be dangerous!

4.  If you finish 4.1 (and turn it in!), here is a video clip I would like you to watch:

Intro to Feudalism - lesson

Or, discover more videos here: Chapter 4 Padlet.  Many of my favorite videos from the whole year are on this padlet.

Some parents have chosen to have their student not take the survey.  If this applies to you, you can play a review blooket or gimkit game while we finish the survey.

2.  We will play Blooket to get those brain cells warmed up and ready to go!

3.  Your AYRY is today.   This score will go in the grade book as a class assignment.  Your quiz is in Showbie. MONDAY 9/18

I'm back!  It was a joyous, whirlwind trip, and I'm sure I'll have lots to share with you throughout the week.

AND...we all need to have a talk about what I expect to happen when you have a substitute.  Why did so many of you forget our procedure for correcting and turning in work? If the email directions told you to watch the edpuzzle videos in class, why did many of you choose not to?

1.  Turn in section 5.  We will correct it together and then you will turn it back in. DO IT RIGHT! (Insert "shakey-finger" motion here.)

2. We will play a gimkit to help you review the chapter.

3.  As a class, we are going to do an activity with parables.   Fables are loved worldwide because of their ability to teach a lesson through a short creative story, usually involving animals or nature.  Parables are a similar type of story. They are brief stories that teach a spiritual lesson. The characters are usually people, not animals, and the events could have taken place in real life.

The founder of Christianity, Jesus of Nazareth, often used parables to teach his followers. He told stories about everyday people and situations to illustrate how his followers should live.

I will project a parable on the screen, and we will read it together.  Then, with your partner:

List the characters in the parable.

Briefly summarize the plot in one sentence or in a series of short statements.

Explain the lesson you think Jesus was trying to teach his followers.

AT HOME

Remember, your next test will have review questions from chapter 1, so it is important that you learn and retain the information.

3.  You have your AYRY ("are you ready yet" pretest) today using Socrative.  The link is in Showbie.  When everyone is done, I will close the quiz and push out your score so you can see it. The main goal of this pretest is for you to see if you are ready for the test tomorrow, but the grade you earn on this DOES count and go in the grade book as a class assignment.

4. You have your first social studies test tomorrow, so I want to explain how they work.

TESTS IN HSS:

All tests are online, so you will launch an app called Illuminate. Use the Chrome browser. You will log in with your google email and password.

The test is mostly multiple choice with one or two short answer questions.  It is not open book. You will see the digital test right next to an answer sheet.  Tap the answer you choose.  Double check your answers before hitting submit.  I will try to input the grades into PowerSchool by the end of the day, so you will know quickly how you did. The next day, we will go over the test so you will be able to see which ones you missed and why you missed them.

If you are an audio learner and do well when you hear things, I also have an audio version of the test available.  If you want to listen to me read the questions aloud, then you will go to akers7.net and scroll to my section on the right side of the page.  Click the link.  It will open a Padlet, and each question has its own audio.  Tap the question you need to hear and take the test as you listen.

If you have questions during the test, raise your hand and  I will rephrase the question for you if you need it.

After chapter 1, all of my tests include review questions from previous chapters.  You must learn the information for this test, but you must also remember it for the rest of the year!  This is why I do not allow test retakes; essentially, your retake is on the next test when you have the review questions.

5.  When most people are done with the AYRY, we will play a game of Trashketball.  I will explain what this is about during class.

Make sure you put your score on the first page. Finally, you will turn the corrected copy back in so I can compare it with your original.  If you do not turn in both the uncorrected and the corrected copies, you will not receive credit for the assignment.

3. STORYTIME! Today, we are really going to dive into the Roman Empire. You will learn about how it expanded from a small republic (rebellion, war, betrayal, jealousy, assassinations...lots of good stuff!) into a giant empire. I will teach it through stories, and I think you will enjoy learning about it.

4. Export sections 1.2-1.3 to GoodNotes. Be sure to have your Ch 1 Work notebook open in Goodnotes first.  You have the remainder of class to work on these. They are due tomorrow.

The plan for this chapter:

Friday - Finish the chapter

Monday - review

Tuesday - review; pretest

Wednesday - Test on Chapter 1.   It's not too early to begin studying.

STUDY GUIDE:

For every chapter I teach, I offer a study guide for extra credit.  You can earn up to ten points (added to the "test" category in PowerSchool) to your grade by completing the entire study guide correctly.  Partial study guides still earn points, so you might as well do at least some of it...it can't hurt your grade and it probably will help! The study guide can be found in Showbie.  Use the textbook and the flashcards to help.  Do not look for answers in Google - that won't help you.

REMINDER:

Back to school night is tonight.  The 7th grade session begins at 6:30 in the cafeteria. You can see the complete schedule on Akers7.

WEDNESDAY 8/23

It's Wednesday!

Wednesdays are our early dismissal days.  The schedule is 1, 2, 3 BREAK, 4, 5, 6, 7, LUNCH, and then you are out at at 1:00.

1.  Turn in your Setting the Stage Assignment to Showbie.  I want you to turn it in, even if you were not able to finish it.  Remember, you need to turn in all three pages of the student worksheet: the black/white map and the two pages of questions/answers. Do not turn in the whole notebook; just turn in the three pages.  I will show you how to do this at the beginning of class if you need a reminder.

2.  After you have turned it in, re-open the Setting the Stage worksheet in GoodNotes.  We are going to go over the answers while you correct your own work.  You will highlight your correct answers. Next to each question, you will write how many points you earned for it.  When we are done, you will total up your points.

There are a total of 26 points (15 for the map, 11 for the questions) on this assignment.  Write the number of points you got correct on the first page (the map) and circle it.

3.  Turn the corrected pages back in to Showbie.  Yes, this means you will have turned in the same work twice.  The first one shows me the work you did on your own.  The second file shows the work you corrected.  IF YOUR WORK IS WRONG OR BLANK, YOU MUST MARK IT WRONG!  Use integrity.  I will compare the two assignments to make sure you didn't change or add your answers as we corrected it.

4.  Settle in for some storytime!  Today, we are going to start learning about how the Roman Republic became the Roman Empire.

Export the Ch 1 Intro and 1.1 worksheet in GoodNotes.  You may also choose to listen to the video for this section that is in edpuzzle.com.  This assignment is due at the beginning of your class period tomorrow.

Yes, tomorrow.

Remember that all answers must be written in your own words.  I'm not asking you to FIND the answers.  Instead, I need your work to show me what you LEARNED!

SUPER IMPORTANT!!! At no time are you allowed to copy and paste answers from the text!  That is, and always will be, plagiarism, and plagiarism is simply a form of cheating.  All work you do for me must always be in your own words.

At home tonight:

Finish Ch 1, section 1.  Use the supplemental video in edpuzzle.com if you need some help.  My room opens at 7:15 each morning if you have questions or need a quiet place to work.

TUESDAY 8/22

Good morning!  I hope things are going smoothly so far.  Please reach out if you need anything.  Come see me, email me, text me...I'm here for you.

1.  You have your Survival Guide Quiz.  It is in illuminate.  I will allow this to be open book - you may split your screen so you have the test open on one side and the survival guide (in Showbie) open on the other.  I hope you do well!

2. I have a quick activity for you to learn how we correct work in my class.

3. You will have the rest of the class period to finish the Unit 1 Setting the Stage.  It is due at the beginning of class tomorrow. SUPER IMPORTANT!!! At no time are you allowed to copy and paste answers from the text!  That is, and always will be, plagiarism, and plagiarism is simply a form of cheating.  All work you do for me must always be in your own words.  ALSO - If you and a friend ever choose to work together, let me define what "working together" means:  you and your partner are working to find the answer to the same questions at the same time. YOU MAY NOT split up the work and then exchange answers.  That, my friends, is cheating, and it is not allowed. You both must do all of the work, but you can help each other find the answers.

When you have completed the assignment, turn the three pages (the black and white map and the two pages of questions) back in to Showbie.  It needs to be turned in by the time class time begins tomorrow.  The 3:00 PM due date in Showbie is just standard; your assignment is due at the start of your class period.  Work turned in after the start of class will be marked late and receive a maximum grade of a D.

If everything is done, please go to Showbie and click the link to explore the chapter 1 videos on the padlet.  You will need headphones.

At home tonight:

Finish and turn in your completed Setting the Stage assignment.

Finish setting up everything on your iPad.

MONDAY 8/21

Good morning, and happy Monday.

Every day, you will receive an email from me explaining what we are going to do in class.  YOU MUST READ THE WHOLE EMAIL EVERY DAY!!!!!  They will make you so happy!

If you are ever absent, you must read the day's email to find out what we did when you were not here.

1.  I am going to finish going over the Survival Guide.

2. We are going to play a Blooket about my survival guide.  Tomorrow, I will give you a quiz about it, so this should help you.

3.  We are going to begin our study of Medieval Europe today.

4.  Go to GoodNotes and create a folder/category/notebook/folder (can't remember what it is called!) for HSS.  Open that category and create or open a notebook for Chapter 1.

5.  Open your HSS class in Showbie. Open Unit 1-Setting the Stage. Click on the files in Showbie and OPEN THEM IN GOOD NOTES in the Chapter 1 work notebook you just made!  All work must be completed in Good Notes, not in Showbie.

6. Tonight, complete questions 1-3 only.  You will have all tomorrow to answer the remaining questions. It will all be due at the beginning of class on Wednesday.

7. Each time we have a lesson, I have made a video reteaching the lesson.  You can access the video, if you wish, by logging in to edpuzzle.com. You will find the link to edpuzzle on Camarena's teacher page in Clever.  In the video, I reteach the lesson and explain each question on the assignment.  I think you will find it helpful.  You are also able to fast forward and rewind the video so you listen to only the parts you need.

Homework:

Review the survival guide.  You can find it in Showbie.

Complete questions 1-3 of the Setting the Stage assignment. DO NOT WORK AHEAD!
