Super Mario Brothers was, by far, the most remembered NES game. While the most salient reason for this widely shared experience is that Super Mario often came with the purchased console, Mario was also (as our group noted) simply the most fun to play. Moreover, some religious parents worried about the occult implications of games like Castlevania (or even Zelda) found Mario always to be perfectly acceptable. Mario was, then, the kind of game everyone could (and did) play.
