While most NES games were side scrollers, players remembered Zelda as revolutionary in terms of game play. Instead of always moving forward or backward, the user could truly explore the world, moving in all directions. In fact, exploration was one of the most integral formal materialities of the game. The user is required to explore, going back and forth through towns, castles, and forests in search of what was next, unlike even Castlevania which required the user to explore, but only in terms of going back and forth.
