F. A. Q. s

Q: Do I have to be enrolled in a Boulder County 4H Club to participate in the Lease an Animal Program?

Yes, you must be enrolled in Boulder County 4H to participate.

Q: Do I have to be in a specific 4H Club

No. You can be a member of any club. You will be required to fulfill your commitments to your Club as well as the commitments to the Lease program. The barn manager where your leased animal is housed will serve as the project leader, so your club leader does not have to have experience with livestock projects.

Q: How much does it cost?

There is a minimal fee when you sign the contract. You will be responsible for all of your costs for the project (ie, boots, show clothing, gas etc), and you will be responsible for paying for the feed and bedding during the week of fair. The Participating Farm is responsible for all of the feed, vet expenses and maintenance for the leased animal.

Q: How much time must I commit?

The lease requires a minimum of 6 hours per month of work with your animal. In addition there will be workshops and extra trainings available. More time is needed from May to August as this is the best time to work with your animal. During Fair week you will be responsible for all of the care for your animal so you must be at the Fair every day. The more time you spend with your animal working with them and practicing showing them, the better you will do at the Fair.

Q: So I own the animal?

No, the ownership of the animal stays with the Participating Farm, as do any products from that animal (ie, milk, fleece, offspring). After the lease is up, the Participating Farm may choose to sell the animal that you leased.
