A Note by F. John Sharp
The first time I met Glenn Osborn in person was at his home in Perrysburg, Ohio. I hadn't been there an hour when he led me across Front Street, oxygen tank in hand, through a secret path in the shrub brush, and onto the grounds of the 577 Foundation, where he had, over the course of years, taken the bulk of the flower photographs that he later turned into his unique form of art. But we weren't strangers.
We first met in an online writing workshop years before. We spent many years chatting and critiquing and arguing and feuding, and then finally making up. But never once in all those years did either of us make the two-hour trip to see the other. Then he got sick, and I decided that was just stupid. That day, hanging out with him, having lunch in the quaint little main drag, seeing in person the inspiration for his art, was one of the best days I'd spent in a long time. When he passed in January of 2010, I decided that I'd like Right Hand Pointing to show his art and his words to a wider audience. We have spent the past two years working through the permission process with his estate and are grateful for the efforts of Kathleen McCall in helping us acquire them.
We are pleased, finally, to present two of his written works, a poem and a work of fiction; and two pieces of his art. The timing is perfect in that the Fine Arts Department at Bowling Green University is going to hold an exhibition. The Glenn Osborn Retrospective will be open April 21–May 30, 2012. The Opening Reception will be April 20, 2012, 7–9 pm at the 1000 Fine Arts Center, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. If you live within driving distance it's worth the time. The photographs are even more spectacular in person. Just like Glenn.
