River: Evidence

The Western dies, jammed in ice.

In dry summers,
her tangled nest of pipes, her rusted boilers break the surface.
Between Yankton and Omaha,
30 wrecks rot in the channel.

River jewels—
moonlight briolettes,
their girdles, reeds,
their pavilions,
        ripples where sunfish feed.
