Restoration Scriptures Portable

Restoration Scriptures Portable (RSP) is an app for Windows, Linux, and Apple OSX to browse and search the scriptures and other documents.

Restoration Scriptures Portable uses an open-source program called DocFetcher to browse and perform complex searches on a collection of documents. The documents provided with RSP include the scriptures (Restoration Scriptures Edition) and other church historical documents in HTML form, as found on the centerplace.org site. In addition, any other files can be included in the document collection.

(Note that RSP requires a Java Runtime Environment, so it will not work on Windows Surface or other devices that use Windows RT operating system. Using Windows 10 in Desktop mode, you may be able to install Java on a Windows 10 tablet.)

Download and Install the Application

Install the program using the instructions below. For more help, see the DocFetcher documentation.

    • Download: Click to download RestorationScripturesPortable_v2.2.0.zip (11/25/2021, 131 Mb)

    • Unzip documents: Extract the files from RestorationScripturesPortable Zip file into your operating system (Windows, Linux, OSX).

    • Files are unzipped into a folder named "Scriptures".

    • For instance, in Windows, open the Zip file and copy the contents ("Scriptures") into your "My Documents" folder.

    • (After you have successfully unzipped all the files, you can delete the Zip file to free up disk space.)

    • Java Runtime: DocFetcher requires a Java Runtime Environment (JRE). See the DocFetcher Download Page for help with Java installation.

    • If you don't know whether your computer has Java installed, go to https://java.com and click the link "Do I have Java?"

    • Run DocFetcher: Run "start.bat" (Windows) or "start.sh" (Linux), or DocFetcher application bundle (OSX)

    • Or, create a shortcut to the "Scriptures/DocFetcher" application.

    • For Windows, there is a "Restoration Scriptures Portable - Shortcut" included in the Scriptures folder that you can copy into your Start menu or Desktop.

    • If you did not install RSP into "My Documents," right-click on the shortcut and select Properties.

    • Change the Target, Start in, and Icon locations to where you have installed it. For instance,

    • Target: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Scriptures\DocFetcher\DocFetcher.exe

    • Start in: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Scriptures\DocFetcher

    • Change Icon: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Scriptures\DocFetcher\img\DocFetcher.ico

After installing, run the Restoration Scriptures Portable application and see the RSP Quick Start guide included with the program.

Modules

Restoration Scriptures Portable (RSP) includes the ability to install optional "Modules", which are optional document collections that you can use for reading or study. Just download a Module file and follow the instructions below to install it. (You are not limited to using these modules--DocFetcher can include just about any type of document in its search collection. These are just provided for convenience.)

In the future, if any of the document collections are updated, RSP Modules may be included here, allowing you to more quickly update the documents without having to download and reinstall the whole program.

Optional Modules:

- RSP-kjv_v1.1.0.zip -- King James Version (KJV browsable HTML, similar to 3-in-1 documents).

Installing an RSP Module

    • Download: Download one or more Modules using the links above. (You should have already installed RSP.)

    • Unzip documents: Extract the files from the Module file into the "Scriptures" folder of your RSP installation. This is important!! Do not unzip the files to "My Documents" or another location--they must be extracted to the "Scriptures" folder.

    • For example, the "RSP-kjv_v1.1.0.zip" Module includes a single folder called "Files".

    • Extract (unzip) this folder into Restoration Scriptures Portable in its "Scriptures" folder. You may get a warning that "Files" already exists here. Click to confirm that you really do want to extract the files.

    • Update Index: Run the RSP program.

    • In the left-hand pane under "Search Scope", right-click on "Files".

    • Select "Update Index".

    • The new files installed from the module should be added to the search index. Now you can use these new files when browsing or searching.

    • View contents of Module: Click on the + symbol next to "Files" under Search Scope, and depending on the module you may need to expand another branch. For the KJV Module, click on the + symbol next to "hs".

    • Make sure the folder name (such as "kjv") is enabled with a check mark next to it.

    • Right-click on the folder name (such as "kjv") and select "List Documents".

    • The documents for this Module folder should appear in the documents window. Click on one of them to view the document, or enter a search query.
