If anyone is interested, i need feedback on the draft Blood and Sand P-16 Tarawa vsql board. I tried to keep the feel of the original boards while working within the VSQL framework to provide LOS functionality. I traced the original board into VSQL and used it’s terrain graphics on the digital board. Ambiguous terrain (H8) was replicated and left for the player to interpret. I would like feedback on the following points and any in general.
Are Jungle hexes (woods and palm trees) distinguishable from woods hexes? I don’t mind a little squint, but it was difficult to make the palms stand out.
Is the ground after the beach at ground level or level one? I followed Iwo’s SSR indicating it was ground level. It is clear from the rules that beach is ground, sea is -1 and there is no reverse slope.
the Pier (Y3) LOS function was a compromise, I couldn’t get the bridge widget to work so I treated it as open ground. LOS works for units on the pier but LOS does not work for units beneath or through the pier. LOS through the sea level is incorrectly shown as blocked. I think this upper LOS is the better way to go.
You can drop the file in your ‘boards’ folder and re-start VSQL, it is number P16. If you put them in row, you can follow the original board and compare.
There are a few more boards to move over to VSQL and i'll post them all on the Squad Leader page on VASSAL.
Special Thanks to Bill Soz for the Iwo board and his gracious and unlimited help with the Tarawa board. I asked a lot of questions.
