Student evaluation consists of five components: Problem Sets (20%), In-class quizzes (10%), TA Recitations (10%), Midterm Exam (30%), and Final exam (30%). The final evaluation is a letter grade converted from the percentage scale taking into account the entire class distribution.
Problem sets will be assigned about every two to three weeks. Students can discuss questions but must submit independent solutions. Violation of the academic honesty code will result in a zero grade and the issue being reported to the dean. Assignment deadlines are firm and late submission will not be accepted except for a medical emergence. Follow Assignments page for instructions.
In-class quizzes via Poll Everywhere. As part of students’ active learning requirement, there are short quizzes throughout the semester and the highest ten will be taken for credit. They are multiple-choice questions that test basic concepts, models, and calculations. Poll Everywhere will also be used for attendance check. Students must register with actual names, an email, and BU number. Please note your BU number is not the number on your BU student card. Your BU number can be found by clicking on "What's My B-Number?" under the Home tab on BU brain.
TA recitations. Starting from the second week, students are required to attend recitations. Teaching assistants will review and discuss lecture materials, work through examples and applications, go over the in-class quizzes, and help students with problem sets and prepare for exams.
Midterm and final exams will NOT be rescheduled because of travel and other personal arrangements. In the case of a documented emergency or conflicts with the scheduled exam date, a make-up exam will be given. Refer to Assignments page for exam schedules, guidelines and the department make-up exam policies.
Attendance policy. Attending lectures and discussions, although not mandatory, will improve students’ ability to succeed in the class and the Econ major. More than three absences without a valid excuse or document or proof will negatively affect student’s final grade. Please maintain mutual respect and courtesy in the classroom. Arrive on time and refrain from texting or browsing the Internet during the lecture. In-class discussion and participation are strongly encouraged.
