There is bipartisan agreement that tax cuts help spur economic growth – when everyone gets them, not just the wealthy families favored by Republican policies. I am proud of the efforts of the 111th Congress to reduce taxes on America's middle class.
These cuts go right to your family budget: So far, the average federal tax refund is up 10 percent or $266 this year for a record average refund of $3,036 so far – an increase the IRS says is largely due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which I supported.
Here are a few of the tax cuts that are helping Long Islanders make ends meet:
• Ninety-five percent of working families received the Recovery Act’s $400 to $800 a year Making Work Pay tax credit in their paychecks in 2009 – and are continuing to in 2010.
• Tax savings of up to $2,500 to pay for college expenses with the American Opportunity Credit.
• Up to $1,500 in tax credits for some energy-efficiency home improvements with Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Incentives.
• An $8,000 tax credit for the purchase of a first home with the First Time Homebuyers Tax Credit.
• Tax deductions for the state and local taxes or fees paid on a new vehicle.
• Expanded tax credits for moderate income families with children.
Its common sense: When middle-class families thrive, the economy thrives.
Of course, it’s important that all levels of government work together to make Long Island more affordable. As a lifelong Long Islander, I know that high property taxes are the greatest threat to our community’s quality of life, another overlooked issue that the Recovery Act was successful in addressing via aid to K-12 school districts.
That’s why I will keep fighting on the federal level for fair taxes for Long Island’s middle class families. Click here to learn more.
