Runnymede Collegiate Institute is the proud home of Runnymede Robotics, better known as Team 1310 in the FIRST® Robotics world. Located in Toronto (Canada), Team 1310 started in 2004 and since its formation, it has provided a positive and safe environment for students, leaders and mentors to work together.
Like many teams, Team 1310 is organized into a number of smaller sub-teams each with their own tasks that contribute to our overall success.
Design Team
Student Team Lead: Violet Miller
Design Team is responsible for deciding how our robot is going to complete the tasks we’re given in each years challenge. We get to design our robot completely from scratch each year, and explore different kinds of mechanisms to make our robot work! We use the program SolidWorks to CAD/3D model our robot and prototype our designs before we hand it off to the Build Team!
Build Team
Student Team Lead: Piper MacDonald
Build Team is responsible for building, manufacturing parts, and wiring our robot. Build students work very closely with the mentors on our team, and are most often found in the shop. Build students get the opportunity to learn hands on, and gain skills that are applicable to careers in engineering, the trades, and STEM.
Programming Team
Student Team Leads: Carson Honeyman, Nathan Zakrzewski
The programming team is responsible for creating code for the robot to run. We make the robot score in the autonomous, “auto,” portion of the match, and we use cameras to position the robot on the field during a match. For example, when the driver is controlling the robot, it needs to know what to do when the driver presses a button; we write the code that tells the robot what to do.
Drive Team
Student Team Lead: Quentin Field
Drive Team is responsible for controlling the robot at competitions, and consists of five main roles. The Driver and Operator drive the robot, and the Human Player interacts with the robots on the field. The Coach tells everyone what to do during the match, and the Technician fixes the robot when it breaks.
Strategy Team
Student Team Leads: Leia Bondi, Darius Malich
On Strategy, “Strat” for short, we focus on planning strategies for robot matches so we can hopefully do as well as we can in matches. We also have a dedicated scouting team who collect and analyze robot performance data to determine which robots we work best with and build the best alliances for competitions.
Communications Team
Student Team Lead: Meghan Gandhi
On the Communications, “Comms,” team, we’re responsible for organizing outreach events, communicating with financial sponsors, and designing team merchandise. We act as the bridge between the team and the community. When it comes to branding, enrichment, or fundraising, Comms has you covered.
Media Team
Student Team Lead: Riva Ma
In the media sub-team, we focus on capturing the journey of Team 1310, from our 6-week build season to competitions, and share it with the world! We focus on creating that outreach and maximizing the exposure of our robotics team to get the best result possible.
Mentors
Our team is extremely lucky to be supported by a range of mentors that volunteer their time to ensure our youth always have someone to run their ideas by or act as a guide. Some mentors are university students, FIRST alumni, or even parents with experience in the field. The mentors make a huge difference on our team, and they give our students insight into postsecondary pathways and potential careers.
Staff Support
Staff Leads; K. Mills, K. McCrimmon
Without support from a variety of staff members, Team 1310 couldn't do what we do best. Runnymede Staff as well as Humberside Staff ensure that both Team 1310 and Team 9262 are always working in a safe, protected environment while acting as guides and role models that our students can follow. Our staff members are the hearts of our team.
