Leslie Matthews (navigator), Ernest Southon (mid-upper gunner) and Lawrence Mitchell (wireless operator) survived the Bay of Biscay crash and were first taken to the island Ile d'Yeu just of the Vendée coast of western France and then handed over to the German authorities at Les Sables-d'Olonne on the 14 July 1943.
