Through Social Emotional Learning (SEL), students develop skills in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. With a strong foundation in these skills, students are significantly more likely to develop healthy identities, achieve personal goals, and maintain healthy relationships.
From preschool to high school, this evidence based approach to wellness decreases absenteeism, dropout rates, and behavioral issues.
Adults who received SEL support while in school are less likely to engage in unlawful activity, or harmful behaviors, and more likely to be responsible, empathetic, productive members of society.
SEL is unique as it is not taught in a traditional way. It is tailored to the strengths and needs of the student. Educators and parents are encouraged to lead by example. Activities range from projects with long term milestones, to five minute check-ins. Every moment students spend developing one or more of these competencies contributes to a brighter future.
Practice both at home, and school, to increase these benefits!
Foundational Skills are basic skills that should be intentonally addressed in every classroom at every grade level. While these foundational skills will look different at the elementary, middle school and high school level, they will support a safe learning environment for all students.
