Our district’s goal is for all English Learners to become proficient in English, graduate from high school, and have a range of academic and professional options.
The Connecticut English Language Proficiency Standards and the Connecticut Core Standards provide the foundations for all programming and instruction for English Learners. Based on individual learning profiles, short term goals are set to measure growth in speaking, listening, reading, and/or writing. Certified teachers provide services to English Learners in a variety of ways, continually adjusting and responding to learners.
The rate of English language development varies widely from student to student, and many students exit the program in three to seven years. All English Learners will have instruction, modifications, and supports to be successful academically and prepared for grade promotion and graduation.
Some English Learners become eligible to graduate with The Connecticut State Seal of Biliteracy. This recognition was established to honor public high school graduates who have attained a level of proficiency in English and one or more other languages. We encourage and support English Learners to achieve this important distinction as Simsbury High School graduates.
