Grading Policy
Participation 15%
Active and thoughtful participation is essential for success in learning Chinese. As language learning is just as much about learning a new culture as well as a new language, class activities are infused with culture. Participating fully in all activities not only allows students the opportunity for language practice, but also allows for the exploration and deeper appreciation of Chinese culture. Students will be assessed on their participation using the Engaged Communication Rubric (attached), which will be averaged and entered into PowerSchool twice a marking period. Additionally, assignments graded for completion and designed to prepare students for successful participation (such as Vocabulary Lists, Quizlet Practice and Character Practice) will also be included in this category.
Assigned Work 35%
All work assigned as either classwork or homework is designed to help students master the language. Work should be done on time and with attention to detail. Assignments will be graded and handed back to students to help them track their progress and identify areas for improvement. Students should review returned assignments to see if extra help is needed in order to make progress in the language.
Assessments 50% ~ There are two types of assessments. They are detailed below:
Interim Assessments - These assessments may include quizzes, smaller assessments that focus on specific grammar and vocabulary acquisition or skill development.
Summative Assessments - These assessments are based on performance and proficiency. They focus on the skills of speaking, reading, writing or listening, and demonstrate a synthesis of language and culture learned within a unit or over time. The goal of a summative assessment is to put language to use in real world situations. Assessments will be designed to cover all skill areas and will utilize various formats. All summative assessments will be announced in advance.
Work Completion – Students are expected to use unit packets and previous handouts to complete assignments to the best of their ability. Work that is not finished, or shows no attempt at accuracy, will count as missing work and will follow the missing work policy below. Students are strongly encouraged to seek out extra help if they are still struggling to complete assignments even when using unit packets and previous handouts.
Missing Work – A grade of 0 will be entered in the grading portal to indicate an assignment is missing. The 0 grade will be changed once the student turns in the missing assignment. Late work will receive a late work grade no higher than 60%. If the assignment is not turned in, the 0 will stay for that assignment. If there are any difficulties in completing missing work, students are advised to come for extra help.
Making up an Assessment due to absence: Any student who is absent for any reason is responsible for making up the missed assessment within one week of the absence (with the exception of end of quarter absences which must be completed sooner if applicable). Work not completed within one week will then follow the “Missing Work” policy above.
