Curriculum

Inquiry-based science instruction enhances students' understanding of concepts in science and increases students’ interest in the field. Engaging, hands-on science activities is at the heart of science instruction. In addition to experiments, Simpson County Schools' science curriculum emphasizes literacy. Science literacy is composed of skills, abilities, procedures, concepts, and meta-cognitive capacities to gain further knowledge in an area. Teachers present science content through complex expository texts such as primary sources, textbooks, and news articles as well as through videos, images, and observations. Students are expected to apply reading and writing strategies to fully comprehend the material.

Disclaimer: The science curriculum documents are based on units from STEMscopes. The core approach is hands-on investigation; doing science is learning science. Teachers are encouraged to enrich the curriculum with additional resources and activities. Our goal is for students to learn content, acquire skills, and develop interests that will prepare them for the next level of life.

  • For the purposes of using the lesson screener, a lesson is defined as a coherent set of instructional activities and assessments that may extend over several class periods or days; it is not just a single activity.
