This page covers:
1. Add a Collection
To create your first collection, navigate to your Omeka dashboard and click "Collections" on the left-hand navigation. From the next page, click the bright green "Add Collection" button. For now, give your collection a title and make it public. You can go back and fill in the remaining fields once you know a little bit more about Dublin Core. (More info on Dublin Core can be found here if you'd prefer to enter it now.)
Now when you click "Collections" you will see your collections listed. Unlike my collections, your collection will be empty as you haven't added any items yet.
2. Add an Item
To create an item, click "Items" on the left-hand navigation. (As the menu is static, you should find it from any page you happen to be on.) Click the bright green "Add Item" button. You will see a page that looks very similar to the "Add a Collection" page, but notice the tabs at the top include "Dublin Core", "Item Type Metadata", "Files" and "Tags". I recommend starting by click on "Files" and uploading the file of your item. Omeka accepts most file types. A full list of the file extensions they accept can be found here.
Next, move to the "Item Type Metadata" tab. You will see a drop-down menu of choices and you should select the Item Type which best describes your item. For example, if I upload a photograph of my site's subject, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana, I would select "Still Image" as my item type. If I upload a letter written by him or a newspaper clipping he saved --even if I uploaded an image file of those items-- I would select "Text" because it best describes the item itself, and not its digital facsimile.
Next, click "Dublin Core" and give your item a "Title". Make the item public by selecting "Public" on the right-hand side. Next, add the item to the collection you just created by selecting it from the drop down menu. With this bare-bones amount of information, you are ready to click "Add Item". Now click "Items" on the left-hand navigation to see your item listed. You should see a thumbnail image of your item, the Title you gave it, the Item Type, and the Date Added. You won't see anything under the Creator column as you haven't entered any Dublin Core metadata yet.
3. Public View
From "Browse Items," click on the item you just uploaded. You will see a blue button that says "View Public Page." Click this to see how your item will appear to users. You can do the same process from the "Browse Collections" page to view your collection publicly. Below is an example of how my item and collection appear publicly. Remember, unless you entered the Dublin Core metadata, your collection won't have much information in it yet.
