SIL’s Global Diaspora Services has identified four areas where we are prepared to offer help to ministry partners and churches. We are ready to meet and consult with you on any of the following focus areas. Please click on the links in the headings for more information.
Scriptures and related materials are available in over 3,500 languages today. There are many organizations and web-based collections that help you locate these Scripture and Scripture-based resources. We can link you to this information and help you navigate these collections to find the strategic resources you need for your ministry.
Effective ministry among diaspora communities, especially those that are forcibly displaced, can require some specialized training. This training typically involves one or more of the following: understanding worldview, cross-cultural communication, trauma-informed approaches, multicultural teamwork, and ways local culture and Scripture intersect.
The global realities of migration have created new contexts for many of our communities and for many of our churches. There are a growing number of ideas and resources available to help make church life a welcoming, rich, multi-ethnic experience. These include ethnoarts, multicultural worship, and effective ministry languages.
This page also includes an extensive resource on English as a Second Language (ESL) covering guiding questions, best practices, recommended curricula, and numerous links to helpful programs, teaching, and tutoring materials.
Language and ethnic identity are among the highest values of diaspora people. Understanding your new neighbors and the composition of the neighborhood is extremely important to a successful ministry. We can work with you and with the current tools available to help identify the languages spoken in your location.
SIL has developed English language learning lessons specifically with newcomers in mind. For more information see https://www.sil.org/resources/english-with-newcomers.
When people are forced to flee their homes, they experience traumatic events that leave them deeply wounded. The trauma healing program was launched in 2019 in partnership with the Church to restore hope and enable people to move on with their new life. For more information see Diaspora Trauma Healing Projects.
