The SIL Global Diaspora Services decided to serve the camp by trying to allay the trauma there. The team presented the first trauma healing workshop in Dzaleka, Malawi in August, 2019. Since then approximately 2000 people have attended trauma healing. Out of this number, 120 have been trained as facilitators and can lead healing groups on their own, four as master facilitators who can train others and mentor them, making the program sustainable.
"Before taking the trauma healing workshop, I didn’t know that my 9-year-old daughter was suffering from trauma. We had noticed her behavior changing: she got angry easily and cried a lot, and she was nervous and held her ears when hearing loud noises. She wanted to be left alone and she couldn't stand watching TV. My wife and I had no idea what was going on and thought she was misbehaving. We even believed she was influenced by an evil spirit, so we prayed for her, but nothing changed.
During the last workshop, I took an eye-opening lesson on listening practice. Immediately I wanted to apply these listening methods to my daughter. Before talking to her, I asked God for wisdom and for my daughter to open up to me. Finally, she told me and my wife what had happened to her. She cried, shouted, and made me promise not to tell anyone. It was so hard for us as parents the hear about our daughter’s pain, but little by little, God healed her heart.
Now I can also help others who are suffering from trauma like my daughter."
“When I came here, I couldn't even eat. My body was in so much pain, even my old scars felt like fresh wounds. My feet were swollen and my body was shutting down. I could not speak, read or write. But now, I am completely healed. Now I want to go back to see the loved ones I left behind.”
We believed that God brought Tunei to us to use him as an example of what trauma can do to a person and what can happen when a person receives help and a place to be heard!
“My husband was always cruel to me. He beat me, disrespected me, and mistreated me in front of other people. Because of him, I fled my country and I was forced to leave my children and other family members behind. That was 18 years ago.
During the trauma healing workshop, the facilitator read a from Scripture (1 Peter 2:24): 'He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds, you have been healed.'
When I heard that verse, I broke down in tears thinking of Jesus and how he was wounded for us and how these wounds healed us from our sins. I was convicted to forgive my husband, even though it was not easy, by the grace of God I released my pain to Christ and forgave my husband.
This prayer changed the way I thought about him. I started having good thoughts and I even prayed for him so that he can receive Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour.”
Grace Simon, a refugee herself, has emerged as a leader in establishing a network of Trauma Healing* groups, even though she had only attended one Trauma Healing equipping workshop as a participant. With help from Trauma Healing Master Facilitator Clene Nyiramahoro, Grace is bringing healing and hope to many in Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi.
