Social Studies

Students at Sigourney Elementary are given social studies instruction based upon the Iowa Core Social Studies Standards. The fifth-grade theme is rights and responsibilities, and the Iowa history focus is civil rights in Iowa history. Background knowledge and instruction are supported by stories selected from our Journeys reading series. To promote an understanding of the civic duties and responsibilities of America's citizens, students participate in Iowa Youth Straw Polls and study the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the founding of America. Students also prepare for and visit JA BizTown. This Junior Achievement program helps students understand our market economy, community involvement, job skills, and personal finance and banking.
