The Sigma Cares Scholarship is an opportunity open to young men who are seniors at a New Castle County high school and are pursuing their education at a 4-year college or university. This scholarship is awarded as a vehicle in helping to decrease the current first-year dropout rate, an issue that is of great importance to the Foundation.
On June 27th, the Lambda Delta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., hosted its annual Sigma Scholarship and Awards Ceremony, celebrating young men as they embark on their higher education journey.
The Lambda Delta Sigma Chapter raised $10,250 in scholarships with the help and partnership of the Sigma Cares Foundation. Nine exceptional high school seniors were honored and received scholarship awards.
Sigma Cares Foundation’s mission & vision is to foster mentorship and leadership while working to provide educational scholarships and engaging in programs and partnerships that influence the lives of those in the communities in which we serve.
Brother Ronald Shaw, Chapter President, addressed the scholars and their families with opening remarks. He encouraged the scholars to embrace the moment and their futures. Bro. Shaw emceed the event and flawlessly introduced all the presenters, provided closing remarks, and transitioned the program to refreshments and fellowship.
Brothers Rahim Banks, Jordan Wynn, and Zackery Rogers presented the Founders Awards. These prestigious awards were created to pay homage to the Honorable Founding Brothers A. Langston Taylor (Brotherhood Award), Leonard F. Morse (Scholarship Award), and Charles I. Brown (Service Award).
Bro. Randy Johnson (SCF President) and Bro. Dr. Elton Smith presented the new Sigma Cares Foundation Community Champion Awards. These awards, presented to the sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Rho Zeta Chapter, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Gamma Alpha Rho Zeta Chapter, were presented in gratitude for their commitment to supporting and impacting communities throughout New Castle County.
Lastly, Bro. David Euwings (Eastern Region Director of Publicity) presented Sigma Cares Foundation New Legacy Awards. The New Legacy Awards were presented for the first time and were created to honor Brothers Alfred G. Waters (Legacy Award) and Frank J. Tait (Legacy Award). Additionally, for the second year, the Chaka K. Williams Sigma Scholar of the Year Award was presented. This award was renamed to honor the late Brother who was instrumental in the growth of Lambda Delta Sigma Chapter and Phi Beta Sigma at large. He served as the seventh president of the chapter and assisted with membership development, youth mentoring, and many fundraising and outreach activities, including the inaugural Golf Classic.
Bro. Calvin Samuel, the Director of Education and Program Chair, addressed the recipients, families, brothers, and sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. He thanked everyone for attending and for helping this night come together. He expressed what the moment meant and how scholars should embrace their futures.
“This Moment isn’t just the culmination, it’s actually the beginning of what you're about to embark on," said Bro. Samuel.
As the award ceremony drew to a conclusion, the recipients took pictures and everyone joined together for refreshments and laughter. The Lambda Delta Sigma Chapter and Sigma Cares Foundation would like to honor the recipients below and thank them for their pursuit of greatness, for applying for the scholarship, and for committing to hard work and scholarship.
