Bilingual, Biliterate and Beyond
Being bilingual and biliterate is a great opportunity for me. It helps open a new door to a new learning experience. My peers and I have the advantage of learning two different languages at the same time. I am very fortunate to be a part of a Dual Language program, and I am looking forward to continuing in the program as I get older.
Being bilingual and biliterate allows me to learn more about myself, and what some of my family members speak. I can speak to my older relatives in Spanish, since my first language was English. It is part of who I am. It helps me learn more about them which helps me learn more about my culture.
In the future I can use my language skills for the benefit of assisting those who need help translating in English or Spanish. I can use my language skills for the greater good. For example, a student in my class last year came from Honduras, not knowing any English. I helped him by translating, and this really helped him to become biliterate and to understand English. He made a big progression.
Besides having more chances of landing a good job or advancing in your career, learning a second language can also give you an insight into other cultures. My heart beats in two languages. Does yours? What does being bilingual and biliterate mean to you?

Use your English to learn Spanish! Cognates are words that you will immediately recognize and understand. They look and sound very similarly to an English word you know!
