This year, we are going to explore the living world—from the microscopic machinery inside your cells to the ecosystems that keep our planet thriving.
Aligned with the New York State Learning Standards, this course isn't just about memorizing facts; it’s about figuring out how life works through hands-on experiments, real-world data, and active problem-solving.
What We’ll Explore Together
The Machinery of Life: Discover how cells function, how enzymes work, and how your body systems collaborate to keep you balanced and healthy (homeostasis).
Matter & Energy: Uncover how plants turn sunlight into usable energy through photosynthesis and how your body breaks down food through cellular respiration.
Genetics: Decode the molecule of life! We’ll look at how traits are passed down, how proteins are built, and how biotechnology is shaping the future.
Evolution & Adaptation: Trace the story of life on Earth to see how populations adapt over time through natural selection and shared evolutionary ancestry.
Ecosystems & Our Planet: Analyze how living things interact with their environments, how energy flows through food webs, and how human choices impact global biodiversity.
What to Expect in Class
Hands-On Labs: You won't just read about science—you’ll do science. Expect to use microscopes, analyze DNA samples, and run ecological simulations.
Students must complete 1,200 lab minutes to be eligible to take the Regents Exam in June in addition to 3 mandatory state labs that are completed in class.
Real-World Skills: You will learn to ask testable questions, design your own experiments, analyze complex data, and back up your ideas with solid scientific evidence.
