Welcome to Honors Life Science: Biology!

Course Description: The honors Life Science: Biology course is intended for the above average student who is not willing to accept minimums. Honors groups will consider, in depth, the chemistry of the cell with emphasis on the mechanisms of metabolic reactions; an integrated study of plants and animals with regard to anatomy and physiology, environmental interrelationships; and asexual and sexual reproduction of all living things. The laboratory is intended to relate the biochemical, anatomical, and physiological concepts presented during lecture. Students will also be required to complete term research projects appropriate to the coursework. Satisfactory written reports of laboratory work are required. Students are required to take the NYS Life Science: Biology Regents Examination. Class meets seven to eight periods per week.

Classroom:

Students are to arrive to class on time daily. Students must bring their chromebook, charger,  class materials, and a writing utensil to each class. 

Most notes will be taken in Unit packets provided in class. A digital copy will also be provided via Google Classroom should a student be absent.

Grade Breakdown: 

Tests 55%- Tests  will be announced at least 1 week in advance. 

Quizzes (10%)- Quizzes will be announced and unannounced.

Labs (20%)- Labs will be completed in class. The lab grade consists of participation, the report, and following our safety protocol. A failure to complete a cumulative 70% of lab reports will result in failing for the quarter. All students must complete a minimum of 1,200 lab minutes as well as 3 mandatory state labs to be eligible to take the Regents Exam in June. 

Participation (15%)- Participation consists of Do Nows, Homework, Other class activities, and Exit Tickets. Homework will be displayed in the classroom as well as posted in Google Classroom. Homework is due the next day unless otherwise indicated. 

Extra Help

Extra Help will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school, or by appointment if a student needs help outside of those times. Extra help is highly recommended, as the Life Science: Biology curriculum is rigorous, and requires high level reading and analytical skills. We learn concepts through phenomena, projects, and labs that take a lot of time to complete. Students utilize this option whether or not they struggle, and often use it to reinforce concepts in class and complete assignments. 

Cell Phone Policy

Students are to store their cell phones in their locker. Please ensure you are following the Walt Whitman High School Cell Phone Policy.
