Sunlight and Weather: In this unit, the children take on the role of a meteorologist. Their job is to help Woodland Elementary and Carver Elementary figure out why Woodland’s playground is warmer than Carver’s playground at recess. The children will figure out how sunlight causes changes in the temperatures of different surfaces.
Push and Pulls: In this unit, the children take on the role of pinball machine engineers. The children will investigate the effects of forces on the motion of an object. They will perform tests on their pinball machine models. Throughout the unit, the children will develop an understanding of why things move in different ways.
Needs of Plants and Animals: In this unit, the children take on the role of scientists. Their job is to help the children of Mariposa Grove figure out why there have been no monarch caterpillars in the community field since vegetables were planted. Throughout the unit, the children will investigate how plants and animals get what they need to live and grow.
