Advanced Fashion Syllabus

Class Description:
Prerequisite: Fashion Design and Illustration Credit: 1/2 Time: 1/2 Year
This course continues a sequence in fashion design and illustration begun in the introductory course (Fashion 1). Students will build upon their knowledge of and experiences in fashion, working on advanced projects in design and illustration. Emphasis is placed upon preparing a true portfolio which could be used to pursue fashion design at the college level.
Students will have opportunites to work with more advanced pattern making and sewing skills, including learning how to use a sewing machine.

Class Procedures/ Routines:
All classes will begin with a "Do Now". These are short tasks designed to prepare students for the day's instruction and assess their understanding. Students are expected to begin working as soon as class starts and continue throughout the period.
Gap Assignments: Students who complete their projects early will choose from a variety of art-related "Gap Assignments" to complete independently. All time spent in the art room will be devoted to learning about/ creating artwork!
Requirements/ Expectations:
Students Will:
-Complete all assignments (including do-nows) with clear care and effort
-Participate in class critiques/ discussions
-Follow instructions/ procedures
-Treat teachers, peers, supplies, and themselves with respect.
Grading Policy:
Students are expected to put forth their best effort in every assignment. Grades will be based on artistic behavior (planning, experimentation, problem solving, etc.) with an emphasis on effort rather than artistic ability. I have high expectations for students and will challenge them in order to expand their artistic abilities and promote individual growth.
Grading Rubric:
20%: Participation
-Attendance is crucial to student success in this class. Unexcused absences and latenesses will result in a
grade deduction.
-During instruction and class discussions students must be attentive, actively
listening, and sharing their opinions for a high participation grade.
-Breaking classroom rules/ procedures will result in a grade deduction.
-Participation grades are posted on infinite campus each week.
30%: Formative Assignments
-formative assignments include Do Nows, Gap Assignments, and projects that take only
one or two days to complete.
-These grades are based on completion/ effort and are posted often.
50%: Summative Assignments
-Summative assignments are the long-term projects that will be completed
throughout the course. They may take weeks to complete.
-These assignments are graded on completion/ time management, creativity/ effort, and understanding
of techniques/ craftsmanship.
-Work that is insufficiently complete or rushed through, careless, or reflect poor
listening during instruction will result in grade deductions.
-As long as students are on-task, trying their best, and using materials/
techniques as instructed, they will receive high scores on summative assignments.
Per school policy, this class's final will be worth 20% of the student's total grade for the year.

Grades posted to Google Classroom are NOT accurate as they do not include every component of the student’s total grade calculation.
Cell Phone Policy:
As per the schoolwide policy, cell phones (as well as airpods and smart watches) are not allowed in the classroom at any time.
Chromebooks/ other technology must be in the students' bags/ backpacks during class. (No chromebooks on desks!)
Attendance/ Absence Procedures:
It is the student's and their guardian's responsibilities to absolve attendance issues. Please reference the Attendance and Absence section of the student handbook for information on how to do so.
A student who does not attend class will be marked absent until the proper procedures are completed. Absence notes are to be turned in to the attendance office, not to me.
Attendance records are available on infinite campus.
SCHOOLWIDE POLICY: Students will not be allowed to make up assignments if their absence is not excused within five days.
