Addition Strategies

There are 5 addition strategies that we will be learning.First, some vocabulary for you:

Addends are the numbers you are adding and the sum is your answer.

Strategy 1: Counting On

Use this strategy when one of your addends is either 1, 2 or 3. For example, 8 + 2. Circle the bigger number and then count on 2. Then say... 8, 9, 10.

Strategy 2: Number Line

For example, 4 + 6: Start with the bigger number , find it on the number line and hop 4 places to the right.

Strategy 3: Doubles

When 2 addends are the same, you have a double, 4 + 4. The children love finding doubles. Doubles are fun facts that are easy to memorize.

Strategy 4: Doubles Plus One

When the addends ascend by one. For example, 4 + 5. If 4 + 4 is 8 then one more (which is the 5) is 9.

Strategy 5: Know Your Combinations of 10

Just like memorizing the doubles facts, combinations of 10 can be fun to know too. Hands are the best reference point. If you put up 1 finger, how many fingers are down? If you put up 2 fingers, how many are down? Etc.
