Helping Your Child Read
Here are some things you can do...
Things you can say if your child gets stuck on a word:
Think about the story.
Look at the pictures.
Get your mouth ready to say the first letter.
Look through the word to the last letter.
Do you see a smaller word?
Does that sound right?
Words of Encouragement Go A Long Way...
For incorrect responses...
I like how you tried.
Let's try to figure it out together.
You're working hard!
You almost have it!
You're getting there!
For correct responses...
You did what a good reader does, you made a mistake and went back and fixed it.
I like how you're matching your words to what you're reading.
Wow! Wonderful! You got it! You make it look easy!
You're reading like you're speaking!
I'm so proud of you!
You're doing all the good things a reader does.
