Science:
Students will continue using Amplify to explore scientific concepts. In 5th grade the units are as follows: Modeling Matter, Ecosystem Restoration, Patterns of Earth & Sky and The Earth System. Throughout the units students will be presented with a real life scenario (phenomenon), and given artifacts (experiments, simulators, visuals) to interact with as well as readings to provide background knowledge. Students will show understanding by writing scientific arguments.
Social Studies:
In 5th grade we will focus on studying The Western Hemisphere (North & South America). The Boces Integrated SS/ELA curriculum covers the history of the indigenous people of the Western Hemisphere and the five themes of geography (location, place, region, movement, human-environment interaction). Most of the work will be done in cooperative learning groups, through readings, discussions, and mini-projects. During the spring, students will work on a long-term project called the State Fair (see examples below). More details to follow!
