Course Overview:
Welcome to the study of United States History! In this class, we will examine the history of our nation from the time of Native Americans and go all the way up to the present day. We will be exploring the various regions of this country and analyzing the major events, developments, turning points, time periods, and people that helped shape America into what it is today. At the conclusion of this school year, you will be taking the United States History Regents, which will include both multiple choice and essay questions.
Class Requirements:
For this class you will be required to bring and do a few simple things that will make both our and your lives easier and insure that we have a successful and enjoyable year:
1) Show up to class ON TIME (which means being at your desk before the bell rings).
2) Bring a writing utensil, and a chromebook.
3) Organize your handouts, notes, classwork, and assessments in your google classroom class drive folder. This will be your virtual U.S. History notebook.
4) R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Not only for your teachers, but for your fellow classmates (Anyone disrupting the learning process will face disciplinary action, starting with phone calls home!)
5) A willingness to work and learn (The only time we will ever get frustrated with a student is if you refuse to put in the necessary effort to reach your potential)
Grading Components:
A. Tests: Exams will be given at the end of each major unit. These tests will be based off of the US Regents and include numerous stimulus based questions. If you miss an exam due to illness, it is your responsibility to schedule a makeup exam. An illegal absence on the day of the exam or failure to schedule a make-up test will result in a grade of zero.
Essays: Improving your essay writing will be essential to success in this course. The Regents Exam requires you to write both a Civic Literacy Essay and multiple Short Response Questions, so the more practice you get with these essays, the more prepared you will be in June! Essays will usually count as Test Grades, but practice essay outlining and document scaffolding questions will also be used as quizzes and homework.
Will count as 60 percent of your grade!
B. Quizzes/Homework/Classwork: Quizzes will be given on a frequent basis. Classwork and homework assignments will be a chance to master the material and receive credit for your efforts.
Will count as 25 percent of your grade
Attendance/Participation: The goal is to create an engaging, interactive, and fun learning environment where you are free to openly express your ideas and opinions. I know that asking and answering questions is harder from some people than others, but being prepared, actively listening, and staying on task are other important components of participation.
Chromebooks: Chromebooks should be charged and ready to use in class and at home on a daily basis.
Will count as 15 percent of your grade!
