AP Human Geography

Course Overview/Description:

Advanced Placement Human Geography is an introductory college course that allows students to investigate geographical patterns and processes throughout the world.  You will have the chance to explore not only names and places on a map, but more importantly how geography influences who we are.  The aim of this course is to prepare you for the AP Human Geography exam which takes place in May.  A good score on the AP test could equate to receiving credit for a 3 credit college-level-course.

Course Outline –

Grading:

Listed below is the breakdown of your quarterly grade:

Tests & Quizzes  - Will be announced ahead of time and will focus on units studied.

Homework – Will consist of readings, summative questions and worksheets.  Homework is assigned on the day it is due and any assignment poorly done will be returned to you for  no credit. All assignments will be posted under the “Homework” section on Google Classroom.

Class DiscussionServes as a tool to gauge whether or not you understand the material.  Class discussion is also a way to become more involved and will make the class more enjoyable for you.

Materials:

You must bring your chrome book to class every day.  I will utilize Google Classroom on a consistent basis.  You are already enrolled in Google Classroom.

You may want to bring a binder to class with some loose-leaf.  All notes will be posted on Google Classroom, but many students find it advantageous to write down the notes or add to them as we go over the material.

I also encourage you to purchase an AP Human Geography review book.  I recommend the latest edition of the Princeton Review AP Human Geography Premium Prep. I also suggest you purchase the latest edition of Barron’s AP Human Geography Flash Cards.  Both items can be purchased on Amazon.

Attendance & Extra Help:

If you have an excused absence on the day of an assessment you will have 5 days to make it up.  Unexcused absences disqualify you from making up missing work.

I offer extra help in the morning and after school (by appointment), but ask that you email me the day before to let me know. You can email me if you have any questions as well.

AP Exam Format

Date: Tues May 7th, 2024

Section I: Multiple Choice

60 Questions | 1 Hour | 50% of Exam Score

Approximately 30%–40% of the multiple-choice questions will reference stimulus material, including maps, tables, charts, graphs, images, infographics, and/or landscapes, roughly evenly divided between quantitative and qualitative sources.

Section II: Free Response

3 Questions | 1 Hour 15 Minutes | 50% of Exam Score

Each free-response question presents students with an authentic geographic situation or scenario and assesses students’ ability to describe, explain, and apply geographic concepts, processes, or models, as they analyze geographic patterns, relationships, and outcomes in applied contexts.

At least one of the free-response questions assess students’ ability to analyze across geographic scales to explain spatial relationships.
