As you may know, Amplify is our Language Arts curriculum, designed to help deliver students a streamlined, effective, and well-rounded education in the Language Arts. Each unit aims to fulfill one or more state standards, and are accompanied by various mid-unit and end of unit assessments or projects.
Below is what we are currently learning about:
Unit 1: Personal Narratives. In this unit, students will learn the basic building blocks for constructing a personal narrative as they read and analyze a number of different personal narratives written throughout history; each of them tackling different topics, time periods, and life experiences. At the end, they will write a personal narrative of their own as a demonstration of all that they learned.
The social studies unit is split into 5 units: World Lakes, United States Geography, England and the Golden Age, Westward Expansion, and the Civil War. Like Life Science below, Social Studies is separated by class, with Ms. Grass and Ms. Avakian teaching different units for the first 3 units.
We switch each trimester, and after all classes have learned the first 3 units in each class, they return to their homerooms and spend the rest of the year learning about Westward Expansion and the Civil War.
The science curriculum is split 3 ways between myself, Ms. Grass, and Ms. Avakian, who teach Physical Science and Earth Science respectively. Students in my homeroom will complete this portion of their fifth grade science education within the first Trimester, and will then transition to one of the other two fifth grade classes during our science hour to learn the other subjects.
In Life Science, students will learn how to classify a living thing, understand how ecosystems work, get a basic grasp on evolution, and find out how our body systems work together to keep us alive.
The Math curriculum covers a wide range of things, which would not be very reasonable to put here in full. Rest assured that students will come away from this year fully capable of taking on what middle school math has to offer.
