In classrooms I use the Second Step Curriculum takes A holistic approach to building supportive communities for every child through social-emotional learning. My goal for my classrooms is for my students to have the skills to have a sense of belonging within their community whether that is here at school or out in their communities.
The Second Step curriculum for class aims to help teach kids skills that can help them in school, at work, and in life, such as listening, focusing attention, making friends, and problem-solving. Throughout the school year each grade has an overlying theme. Within each theme are lessons that builds on those skills.
Each grade level follows the same themes but the higher the grade is the more in depth we get on our skills. The skills we are building on in grades K-5 are Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving.
