Atwater students are becoming effective communicators. They apply higher order literacy skills to evidence-based writing and speaking products for an audience beyond the classroom.
Throughout their experience here at Atwater, students learn how to engage the community through the use of a variety of modes of communication. After deeply engaging in content and building background knowledge, students then transfer their learning to a piece of evidence-based work that educates others. The student work samples below demonstrate the variety of ways in which Atwater students communicate their learning and evidence-based opinions for an authentic audience.

Each spring, Shorewood students present authentic learning projects and products at the district-wide Authentic Learning Showcase. As part of this celebration of learning, each school designates a keynote speaker - a class or group of students - to share more about their expedition.
(Please note: due to the COVID pandemic, the Authentic Learning Showcase did not take place in 2020 or 2021, but will make a return in 2022 and our Atwater Crew will be ready)
The first Authentic Learning Showcase took place in May of 2017. Atwater's presentation featured our 6th grade Crews sharing more about their yearlong expedition on rivers and communities. This expedition also featured cross-curriculuar experiences with our music and orchestra departments. You can hear the 6th grade students speak from 9:25 - 18:25
In 2018, the Atwater keynote featured the 1st and 2nd grade multi-age classes. Listen to students share more about their Crew project: "Here We Grow: Rocks and Kindness" You can hear Atwater students present from 8:20 - 13:25.
In 2019, a group of Multi Language Learners presented on behalf of Atwater. You can hear Atwater students talk about their experiences studying local immigrants and immigration from 13:50 - 19:30.
