INTRODUCTION TO SPORTS MEDICINE
Credits: 2.5 (Semester)
This course is designed to introduce the profession and the historical foundations of the field of sports medicine. This course will delineate the responsibilities of the Sports Medicine Team. Various career opportunities that are in the field of sports medicine will be discussed as well as legal and ethical considerations that sports medicine professionals may be faced.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
Credits: 2.5 (Semester)
This course explores the root words, suffixes, and prefixes of the vocabulary used in medical offices, hospitals, and other health settings. Students review the nervous, skeletal, cardiovascular, muscle, and other major systems of the human body, and discuss terms related to physiology, anatomy, and pathological conditions. Students learn to spell, define, and pronounce common medical terms.
NUTRITION / ADVANCED SPORTS MEDICINE - COURSES ARE PAIRED AND MUST BE TAKEN FALL/SPRING
NUTRITION
Credits: 2.5 (Semester)
This course is designed as an introduction to fundamental human nutrition concepts, including nutrients, digestion, absorption, and metabolism, and the scientifc processes for creating evidence-based nutrition recommendations. Students will explore how nutritional needs change and vary over their lifespan, from early childhood, adolescence, adulthood and older age. Students will learn the basics of dietary planning, science behind nutrition, functions of the main macromolecules, caloric intake balancing, nutrition for physical activity, uses of vitamins and minerals in the body, and nutritional changes for athletes throughout their life.
ADVANCED SPORTS MEDICINE PRINCIPLES
Credits: 2.5 (Semester)
This course will build upon the foundational knowledge learned in the Intro to Sports Medicine course with an emphasis in diagnosis and treatment of athletic injuries and illnesses. Emphasis will be on understanding the pathology of these conditions and implementing preventive measures. Students will learn a range of sports medicine techniques, including bandaging, wound care, taping, and the use of protective devices.
Pre-requisite: Successful completion of the Introduction to Sports Medicine course.)
