The Health and Physical Education department is committed to promoting and teaching Shore Regional students the importance of health, wellness, and physical fitness. The department utilizes a variety of learning strategies that are inquiry and problem-based approaches that contain elements that integrate 21st century skills and themes into the curriculum. The department also infuses comprehensive classroom assessment tools that measure a full range of student's abilities through the use of varied formative and summative assessment strategies to help support and improve student achievement. Health and Physical Education at Shore Regional also establishes classroom management systems that recognize diverse student needs and promote individual learning plans. These lessons and strategies will be taught in both the health classroom and in physical education.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9-12

HEALTH 9
Credits: 1.25 (Quarter)
This course will introduce students to information and skills necessary to make positive, healthy life choices as they approach adulthood, and will address issues that can impact their quality of life. Students will identify and practice decision making skills, refusal skills, and conflict resolution skills. Students will also learn the importance that stress management can have on their overall health and well-being. Other topics include grief and loss; values; sexually transmitted infections, contraception, alcohol and tobacco; and substance abuse relating to prescribed and over the counter medicine.
SAFETY
Credits: 1.25 (Quarter)
The 10th grade Safety course is a driving theory course that introduces students to the rules of the road and teaches them how to become safe, mature drivers. This course will give students the knowledge to safely navigate NJ roadways, as well as teach them how to have a positive and safe attitude towards their driving privilege. Topics that will be covered during Safety include: defensive driving skills, the dangers of distracted driving, NJ regulations and penalties, the effects of drinking, drugs and driving, sharing the road with others, organ donation, GDL laws and the responsibility of a driver. At the end of this course, students will be given the NJ State Permit Exam in conjunction with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission to test their knowledge.
HEALTH 11
Credits: 1.25 (Quarter)
This course is designed to assist students in obtaining accurate information and making wise decisions related to their personal health. Students learn the importance of positive self-image and good communication as essential components for building strong, long lasting relationships. Topics will include communication skills; healthy relationships; teen violence; sexual diversity; sexually transmitted diseases; birth control; pregnancy; and substance abuse.
HEALTH 12
Credits: 1.25 (Quarter)
This course focuses on encouraging seniors to take control of their personal health and wellness and to value it on a daily basis as they become more independent. Students explore the broader meaning of what being “healthy” is and what it means to achieve optimal wellness beyond high school and as an adult. Specifically, students discuss and learn about mental health issues facing America, the importance of nutrition and how it relates to obesity, and how lifestyle diseases develop. Other topics include CPR and First Aid, as well as relationships, marriage and family life.
